TFM isn't really very "dark."  BTW is much darker.

Lots of things make music sound "dark."  One not mentioned yet, and not always true, but in general minor key songs will seem much darker.   In general pop music is a major key genre.

I LOVE Dark music.   Gothic and Industrial, most metal, all are dark.

Can you imagine Gaga doing this style, but with some added industrial electronic elements?

Dark Pop is all about lyrics and themes for me tbh. Sound is purely optional.

Dark Pop can be orchestral like Marina or Florence. It can be bass and synths like BANKS. It can be Playground like Melanie.

And in my opinion, it's the songs that don't sound typically "dark" that are usually the ones that cut deepest.

It's all about the atmosphere for me. When I think "dark Gaga", I immediately think Born this Way. The music is very dark, and yet the lyrics and themes are not sad or depressing, they're incredibly empowering.
