Joanne wouldn't exist without ASIB

Love the Joanne era? Well, you can thank A Star Is Born for that. Because, as I'm going to show you right now, Joanne would never have existed had Gaga not signed on to star in ASIB.

Let me take you back to the fall/winter of 2015. Gaga's supposedly in the midst of recording her disco-influenced fifth album (we hear reports of her collaborating with Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, RedOne, Mark Ronson, etc.). It's been a few months since she wrapped up the C2C tour. She's starring in AHS. And she's serving us high-fashion, "I'm about to save pop music" lewks.

At the same time, she's in talks to star in Barbra Streisand's remake of the musical Gypsy, which I imagine she was extremely excited about. She meets with Streisand in Aug 2015, and in Oct 2015 we get a few articles that confirm this rumor. After the C2C era Gaga is in a perfect head space to star in a musical and sing Broadway showtunes.

However, the movie hits a snag in October when Universal Pictures pulls out, and I imagine Gaga must have been a little bummed.

Meanwhile, Bradley Cooper is working on his directorial debut, A Star Is Born, and in December 2015 we get conflicting reports about Beyonce starring in the film. 

Flash forward to the end of April, 2016, when Gaga and Bradley cooper are spotted on a motorcycle. 

Rumors swirl in early May that Bradley has chosen Gaga to star in ASIB, and by mid-June it's official that she is in fact going to be in the movie. Based on this timeline, I think it would be safe to assume that negotiations between Gaga's team and the movie execs occurred around February-April 2016.

By the end of the ASIB negotiations, she shed all remnants of high fashion and starting serving "I'm a just a regular gal who writes songs...I wear t-shirts and ripped jeans" -- much like her character in ASIB.

If you're thinking to yourself "Well Gaga's fashion obviously becomes more casual in the summer", look at the previous summer of 2015. Yes, it's more casual, but they are still distinctly "Gaga".

The summer of 2016 was more "I need to pick up some more horse food at the corner store" chic 

I think it's very plausible that one or more of these statements are true:

1. Recording Joanne was Gaga's conscious way of getting into character for ASIB.

2. Gaga was writing songs for ASIB with Mark Ronson, and realized that she wanted to use some of them for herself, so she put the disco album on hold and released Joanne. i.e., Joanne was full of ASIB leftovers.

3. We all know how seriously Gaga gets into her roles. Maybe as she was studying the script for ASIB she became attracted to the idea of releasing organic, analog music and subconsciously morphed into her character. This would explain why a city-bred girl from New York City would do a complete 180 and record country music -- a genre she doesn't really have any roots in.

TL;DR: No ASIB, no Joanne.

Wasn't there a rumor that they made the whole album Joanne in just a few months until it was released

Using some "leftovers" from ASIB (Diamond Heart for example could be one ) and some newly written songs for a more personal album (Joanne, Grigio Girls, Million Reasons, Angel Down) and just like that we have a whole album.

According to Gaga 5 Foot, they started recording the album around June. It took around 3-4 months to have it ready.

she said in an interview the direction of the album changed after Oscar night when she performed TIHTY and felt her music needed to say something

Well, I couldn't agree more. This type of album, Joanne, is conditioning our minds to like country-produced songs by Lady Gaga. They (Gaga's team) would like to take us slowly but surely to a whole new era where Gaga has more country-pop vibes songs. If they will release LG6 synth/pop-inspired songs then shift to ASIB official soundtrack right away, the whole movie will not be looked so authentic tbh.

I think it was the one with Zane for Beats 1. Such a cute interview. She said she couldn't make music that was just happy and ignored everything else. That she has done that and she'll tour for it until she's 79 or 90 like Tony and keep singing p-p-p-poker face But she can't make music that ignored bad things in the world anymore.

that could've been it if not she really reinforced it in that interview I just remember it was specifically Oscar night as the time the direction changed

That doesn't lead her exactly into country music thought...

But this genre wasn't also really new to Gaga, as we have BTW Country Road Version, Stuck On ****in' You, the whole concept of Yoü and I and even a country moment during the Swinefest at SXSW - maybe ASIB was the eureka moment...

@PunkTheFunk where chronologically Gaga's Malibu house is located? It look a big part in her transition into Joanne
