What I meant was demand for housing is partially fueled by an increase in the number of "employed" people looking for a place to stay

Ohhhhhhhhhh u mean economy fueling housing demand gotcha.

Yeah theyve said employment gains may have a lot to do with it as people with more purchasing power partially offsets measures the Government puts in place to try to cool market

I thought u were saying the economy was strong because of housing market. Although it does contribute it wouldnt explain it all

He’s pretty much banking on a favorable permutation in the MPC (in terms of potential growth) and a larger Keynesian multiplier to offset the cost of these policies. It might be an interesting economic experiment if the US debt weren’t about to hit $21 trillion.

Well you definitely get multiplier effect. Problem is you need A LOT of multiplier effect for tax cuts or spending increased to be revenue neutral

Getting a 1 to 1 ratio in terms of dollar in increased revenue for every dollar cut most of the times wont happen unless u crossed very specific thresholds that changed business and consumer behaviour a lot. I dont think it will be the case to the extent needed

Also the $21 Trillion debt adds another issue to this equation that i think Trump is ignoring...

A stronger economy naturally has higher interest rates... if economy does get stronger from growth rates will increase more than they would have without these policies... with $21 Trillion debt, even a 0.5% increase in interest would equal to $105 Billion more annually on interest payments. A 1% increase would be $210 Billion a year more interest

With a debt so large, the higher rates from strong economy alone will wipe away most of the offset from stronger revenue from higher growth itself 😬

of course the effects of higher interest on debt is a longer term issue. At first we wouldnt notice this because each debt bond the Government sells to raise money has a maturity date and only get refinanced with a new issued bond when thenold one is payed off. So it would take some time for the entire debt load to be affected by higher interest rates. But eventually it would

What do u think saved our economy in 2009 when Oil went thru a temporary collapse and the resuced demand in US killed 20% of our manufacturing?

Besides Government stimulus... the housing boom that started in 2000 and accelerated even more after 2009 when interest rates dropped held it together :applause:

add in refinancing from equity and consumer debt and retail surged on money Canadians didnt have hence a consumer debt of 167% of income :poot:

The last 2 years there has been very solid gains in employment, wages and in sectors not dependsnt soley on consumer but...

Its still to be seen if the more sustainable balanced growth last 2 years will compensate for imbalanced growth 6 years before that

Should interest rates rise too fast or something sends a shock to indebted consumers Canada could find itself in an extremely severe recession :ohno:

NAFTA uncertainty isnt helping either. The US ultimately has more barganing power in these discussions than Canada or Mexico due to its power and size 👀

Canada or Mexico can retaliate with measures to harm US growth... the US on the otherhand can retaliate with measures to cause actual shocks on both Canada and Mexico if it decided to play difficult

No body benefits from a hostile trade environment... Trump is moving away from a lopsided deal however, much to the dismay of mostly everyone.. 8-/

I know no one benefits. But given that Trump isnt rational, he has the power to do more serious damage to Mexico and Canada than us to the US because the US economy is so much larger

Anyway Trump is impossible to reason with because he doesnt even educate himself on facts

He wasnt aware the US has a goods and trade surplus with Canada when he made the remarks we steal US manufacturint jobs. The over-all trade Surplus Canada has with the US is only if you count energy (Oil and Gas) but on goods we actually buy more from US

Also more importantly is the account balance of trade which is total trade not just physical things.

If you include financial services, telecom, brokerages etc in trade... then even with Oil and Gas included, the US has a trade surplus with Canada

He wasnt even aware of that :rip:

Its a little too high tbh... a few individuals who dont loose job or get hours cut will benefit and be better off yes but the majority of ppl will be worse off.

This will reduce oppurtunity in level entry jobs where ppl gain their first experience... also companies can only cut so much staff so any savings they cant make up for by cutting staff will raise price of goods and services for everyone else :deadbanana:

The Government here in Ontario is so irresponsible you have no idea. They put so many rules, regulations and requirements that raise the cost of doing everything... not just running a business but everything :air:

They also burn cash like if it grows on trees. I remember a couple years ago Ontarios deficit was bigger than Canadas Federal Government like WTF :deadbanana:

I personally hope the Liberals won't get voted for again in the upcoming Ontario election, but it's so obvious they're trying to win votes in the short term. The raise in minimum wage would have gone better if they did it slower over a much longer period of time. Kathleen Wynne is so ridiculous and is desperate for anything, knowing that her approval rate is so low. She and the Ontario Liberals are so...

ya know?

Spoiler

Only thing I agree with is the implementation of the updates in sex ed. That was so overdue.
