Murders in New York City are on track to hit another historic low, according to NYPD statistics for the first eight months of the year.

The city has seen 179 homicides this year as of Sept. 1 — a 22.5% drop compared to the 231 homicides in the same period in 2016, the Daily News has learned.

If the trend continues through New Year’s Eve, the city could be on track to shatter the record low of 333 set in 2014.

Last month, Chief of Crime Control Strategies Dermot Shea estimated that the year-end total would be “somewhere around 300.”

There’s more good news. The number of shootings is down 22.86% as of Friday, dipping to 523 this year, compared to 678 in the same span last year.

If that trend holds, it will set yet another record, coming in at about 800 shootings by the time the ball drops in Times Square.

The city ended 2016 with a record-low 998 shootings.

Overall, major crimes are down 6.3% — 63,157 in 2017 compared to 67,435 in the same period in 2016.

Trump falsely claims U.S. murder rate is at ‘45 to 47’-year high

“Through seven months, we are on pace to finish the year potentially under 100,000 index crimes and that would be the first time that that's occurred,” Shea said Aug. 3.

Shea said through the end of July, there had been just over 54,000 major crimes. There were just over 102,000 crimes in all of 2016.

Police brass have touted the department’s anti-gang efforts and credit their emphasis on targeting street crews and repeat offenders for the sharp drop in shootings.

The NYPD also point to its new precision policing approach as a more effective alternative to stopping and frisking people in minority neighborhoods — a widely criticized tactic used by cops under former Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

That's why I posted this. The fear mongerers in Washington and the media want u to believe the world is falling apart, when it's actually drastically improving.

In what way is the world getting worse?

- Environmentally despite recent efforts by some Developed Nations, globally it is still deteriorating

- Income inequality has grown much worse in the last few decades. Top 1% have record wealth earnings while middle class can barely keep up with inflation. Middle class saw great gains from late 1940s to 1970s after which point most of the gains went to the very rich

- Mental Health and anxiety problems keep rising. Some of it is just better diagnoses but modern stress life may not be helping. Modern life also has strange late-work shifts that mess with our minds and body. In the past this life reality was a small percentage of people

- Electronics creating disruptions in sleep patterns, moods, work productivity... social media and texting hurting many peoples abilities to interact properly face (obviously not everyone)

- The chemicals and GMOs in food we eat are worse than ever perhaps in part (among other factors) why cancer has surged so much last few decades

- In our grandparents days there was stronger sense of social principals (among average joes) than in todays me generation. While some social change is good, i find people are more selfish now than ever before. Some anthropologists have ever refered to this generation as the “me” generation. Someone going out of their way and making sacrafices for you? If its not your best friend or close relative most people now cant be bothered with inconviniences

Im not some extreme pessimist here. I recognize fully that many many things in the world are getting much better. Over-all if I had to pick I prefer to live now than 50 or 100 years ago for sure...

But to say its only getting better is a reach. I can think of a massive list of things in which weve actually deteriorated as a society. Those are just a few things that came to mind on the spot now that u asked. But if i were to sit here and think, i could think of dozens more probably

Okay and that's fair to acknowledge but it seems many people only focus on the negative, which is a shame.

Well the environmental problem is at least being addressed. The US might be a mess but the world at large is def moving in the right direction.

Income inequality does need to be dealt with tho

Its moving in the right direction but for the moment the problems are getting worse not better

For starters Europe and maybe the odd other country is the only place that is super serious about it. Most places are investing only moderate amounts.

Oil consumption will still rise 1.3 Million Barrels a day next year alone! So its still surging

And then theres the fact that CO2 emissions is basically the only major thingg were seriously tackling. Other major issues exist as well

As for income inequality, i think at least to a partial degree, the “me first” attitude of todays society may be playing at least a partial role in this. Most companies dont truly care about their employees anymore, they take advantage of them if they can...

Not to say thats a new problem, selfish powerful people have always existed. But i think greed is at a pretty recent all-time high... also other factors are at play for income inequality too that arent just about attittudes

But I dunno, of all the things that bother me about society the “me first” attitude is the worst, especially among average joes.

People just arent connect anymore. Half the people dont even know their neighbours only 3 houses down :rip:

I like the social improvements on toleranced and reduced judgements... in that aspect its better... but in terms selflessness i think its at an all time low since the industrial revolution :air:

Maybe in stone ages when ppl fought for scraps of food selfishness was worse. But in recent history i think its worse than ever and I dont like it 👀
