Why did Lady Gaga call her song "John Wayne" when he was racist?

I've always wondered this... Never really voiced my opinion on this but...
I really like the song and I get that it's about her love for rough and wild cowboy type guys but why would she name it after someone who was the opposite of what she stood for?

Here's a quote from his interview with playboy in 1971:
"I believe in white supremacy, until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people ... I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from [the Native Americans] ... Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves."

This song never sat right with me, I really like it and it's an absolute bop but I wish she didn't use his name.
It just feels weird to see her dancers (which a lot of are black) dance to a song which is named after a white supremacist. It just feels very awkward to me.
Maybe she didn't know but how come no one in her team or her record label or anyone pointed this out that this maybe isn't the best song name choice?

I get that he's an "Iconic actor" but in my opinion that does not justify his racist views.

There are more of his questionable quotes in this article.

At this point he's more of a name than a person.

She also wrote Sire for MJ when he almost definitely was a pedophile.

John Wayne is an idea, not a man. He's a stereotype.

It's just a metaphor. Also, the guy died 38 years ago. No need to go all SJW now. Song is a ****ing killer anyway.

I guess her merely using his name can only mean she endorses every single view that person had including racism... despite speaking out heaps against it :interestinga:

Yo GagaGaga

Yeah, like others have said, its more of what he represents than Gaga actually praising him.

But here's another theory, the song could be about John Wayne Gacy

doesn't get much more wild than that :poot:
