sexy 3,135 Posted November 5, 2017 Share Posted November 5, 2017 I honestly think one of the main reasons is because the whole thing was hyped as this "reverse-Warholian expedition" that would have that "fresh 2013 sound" and be innovative and academic. Ultimately, it all felt a bit contrived and I think there was a lot of confusion on what the **** "ARTPOP" even was supposed to be – and at times, it seemed like Gaga herself didn't even know what this project was supposed to be. She had a ton of ideas, and a lot of them just didn't pan out (the app), or felt rushed and messy (Venus being the original 2nd single, then DWUW replacing it, then the DWUW music video not ever being released). I feel like all of that contributed to the hate Gaga received. ARTPOP felt pretentious and self-important. I really think it would have fared better if she had just released the album as a simple album with a different name – like "Aura" or "Venus" or something without the whole "art existing in pop" theme.
