Watch: JT blames Janet for Super Bowl

For those of you who weren't around or too young to remember exactly how the post-Super Bowl fallout transpired... let me remind you! Justin Timberlake essentially put the blame directly on Janet in this interview with KCBS. Don't be fooled by all the things he said in the years after - this clip shows his true colors at the time.

Listen as he retells the events, while very visibly angry...

"When what happened happened, I mean I was completely shocked and appalled."

Now, it's important to take the interview above into context. It is the 3rd known statement from him about the incident. Over the course of those few days, he went from being proud of it the night it happened, to apologetic, to angry and blaming.

This Gawker article retells the sequence of events very, very well:

...starting with Timberlake's drastically different reaction on Access Hollywood recorded the night of the Super Bowl. I couldn't find footage of this online, but there's a transcript in Frederick S. Lane's book The Decency Wars: The Campaign to Cleanse American Culture:

He cheerfully described the show for co-hosts Pat O'Brien and Nancy O'Dell: "It was fun. It was quick, slick, to the point."

"You guys were getting pretty hot and steamy up there," O'Brien pointed out to Timberlake.

"Hey man, we love giving you all something to talk about," Timberlake laughed.

By 11:47 pm that night, Timberlake's tone had shifted: "I am sorry if anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance at the Super Bowl," he said. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."

A few more days later, in an interview with Los Angeles' KCBS that was also broadcast on Entertainment Tonight, Timberlake described himself as "shocked and appalled."

At what, though? The answer should have been himself, if we're taking his narrative at face value.

[There was a video here]

Jackson's spokesman, Stephen Huvane, told the New York Times that "Timberlake was supposed to 'peel away' Jackson's rubber bustier 'to reveal a red lace bra...but the garment collapsed.'" Timberlake's mention of a wardrobe malfunction seemed to corroborate this story. If we believe it, Timberlake's hand was the one that set the malfunction in motion.

Of course, none of that makes sense. Imagine what the finale would have looked like with one boob hanging out in red lace, slightly less covered than the other. And I don't know what a "collapse" in that patent leather action-figure armor would look like, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't look like Justin Timberlake reaching over to snatch the material covering Janet Jackson's right breast.

I think it's pretty clear that what happened was exactly what was supposed to happen, and it was only the negative crowd reaction that sent those involved scrambling to revise.

It didn't take long for Timberlake to show his hand, as he did in the aforementioned KCBS interview:

"The fact of the matter is, I've had a good year, a really good year, especially with my music, even me personally. I don't feel like I need publicity like this. And I wouldn't want to be involved with a stunt, especially of this magnitude. I immediately looked at her, they brought a towel up onstage, I immediately covered her up. I was completely embarrassed, just walked off the stage as quick as I could."

That's pure careerism: Slimy, but good for business.

It is also important to note that everyone is outright LYING when they say that this was an accident - these photos prove it. The story that was told was that the breast cup was supposed to tear away revealing her breast concealed behind a red bra. But look close at these photos... it's OBVIOUS there was no red bra underneath that cup. It was merely a lace border attached to the top of the cup.

So, while I vilify Justin for blaming Janet for this, they are both lying to us. The pictures tell us all we need to know.

Justin has a history of throwing people under the bus, as ONTD pointed out in this compilation. The worst thing is, this summary is ~brief~, there are many more instances of this sort of thing from him.

Honestly, I will always be bitter with how Janet was treated following Nipplegate VS how Justin was treated. :madge:

It's so disgusting, but not remotely surprising. It was his action that lead to her breast being exposed, yet she gets banned from the Grammys that year (while Timberlake got to perform...) and now he's headlining the Super Bowl this year so we can likely hear that crappy Trolls song. Ugh.

I've never seen the HQ pictures before, is there any explanation to why the 'bra' was a button on and not part of the whole outfit

So the plan was to take off her bustier to reveal, what? A single red sparkly sticker? Why? How does that make any sense? :duck:

Oh, I'm just visiting-

Was it not clearly a planned stunt? Why would he randomly rip her titty off 4 no reason :air:

Right, it is very obvious to me that this was planned, especially since the stunt was made to match the lyric "Better have you naked by the end of this song"....

My guess is that she probably was supposed to have a nipple pasty or something, and this was ripped off along with the breast cup.

But really, it never ceases to astound me how Americans can be outraged by a nipple, or a middle finger, and yet feel like this is normal to watch an ultraviolent sports game in family :rip:

I was not around at that time and haven't really heard much about this until now, but why did people make such a deal about it? Ofc people would by shocked at the moment but banning Janet to events and radio refusing to play her songs sounds just to much. Didnt Lil Kim go to the VMA with one boob hanging out also around the same time? and nowdays people could come more or less naked to an event but they dont get anymore backlash then a few bad articles about them, then it's forgotten about.

He's a terrible human and i want this sh*t to blow up in his face, for both Janet and Britney

In the end it'll all work out for Janet though...as they say, you die twice. The first being your physical death and the second being the last time someone says your name. Janet will live longer.

2004 was a different time

I think society's opinion of this moment has changed so much in 13 years, because of societal norms shifting.

I was 12 at the time and was at a Super Bowl party. The kids, including myself, were off playing and when we went and visited the parents, the event had just happened. The parents were a tad shocked because they all had kids. But that initial shock was NOTHING compared to what was to come the next day. The media BLEW IT UP.

We owe her so much.

This video makes me sad
