ISIS capital defeated

"(CNN)US-backed forces fighting ISIS in Raqqa say "major military operations" in the city have ended and that the jihadists have lost control of their self-declared capital.

The development marks a decisive victory in the fight against ISIS, though US officials said there were still pockets of resistance in the city.

"Major military operations in Raqqa are finished but they are now clearing the city of sleeper cells -- if they exist -- and mines," Talal Salo, spokesman for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, told CNN. The SDF is a coalition of Arab and Kurdish fighters. 

"The situation in Raqqa is under control and soon there will be an official statement declaring the liberation of the city."

I saw this this morning in the news!

It's exciting but scary at the same time, hopefully it means something else in the bigger scale. Sadly I'm not that well informed, but ISIS is still a worldwide thing.

Can someone explain dumb ignorant me if this will be relevant at a bigger scale?  because I'm just scared this will ignite more attacks and fury from ISIS.

This is amazing news, but as one group falls, another will rise in the former groups ashes.

Raqqa was their last major base. They lost their grip in Iraq when Mosul was liberated some time ago, and now they've lost their largest stronghold. They're not completely defeated, but the fall of Raqqa is a massive defeat.

Some people are fearing that European ISIS fighters coming back to Europe and do attacks here, but yet that wasn't the case

I really do hope so. The Kurds finally need their homeland but what Iraq/Turkey (not sure if Iran are also doing this too) are doing to prevent it. They've (the Kurds) had enough **** and the referendum shows overwhelming support. A Democratic and free Kurdistan is definitely a trillion times better than Al Qaeda 3.0.

also it’s disrespectful towards dead Syrians and all the refugees to talk about splitting of their country, while many are still fighting against Assad. 

 

What happened to all the Daesh fighters, they went underground? How many dead, how many captured?

I hope there’s transparency and taking of responsibility when it comes to targeting civilians, no matter which side did it.

It’s weird to talk about victory, when the city has been bombed to ashes. 

At least they can’t claim “caliphate”, but I’m afraid they’re not all gone. And that ideology.

 

 

And I can’t at Trump supporters on Twitter, saying Obama didn’t do anything in 8 years and Trump “defeated ISIS in 8 months”.

ISIS didn’t really gain prominence until Obama’s last 4 years of office even then he managed to take down Osama Bin Laden  and what exactly did Trump do to “defeat” ISIS  the delusion is strong

Why shouldn't Kurdish be allowed to have a state?

I just said I can’t call it liberation if there were almost no civilians left alive to be liberated. If it’s all bombed to ashes, idk what to call it.

I mean, why shouldn’t Catalonia be independent? You just said you’re against creating new countries based on ethnicity, the idea is outdated so what’s with Kurdistan? How about one country where everyone is equal? Syria is a war torn country since 2011, it’s like people only care about drawing more borders instead of fighting the oppression, the dictator and all these extreme groups? The country is not stable. It’s like vultures are coming now to claim which part is theirs. Where are all the civilians? Are they all dead? What about millions of refugees? There are so many questions and so little answers.

And I know you’ll ask me about Palestine next, so I’ll tell you in advance I wouldn’t oppose one state solution there either IF there’s possibility for everyone to be equal, no military occupation, no different laws for different ethnicities, basic human rights for everyone, freedom of movement, right of return of millions of refugees etc, but we know that is not happening.

You wouldn't call the liberation of Germany from the Nazis not liberation as well ?

But I agree IF a state with equal rights without oppression is created I'm in favor of it in both cases, but it doesn't look like it as for now. Especially when in case of Kurdistan the territories are in several countries

I don’t think you can compare one group taking over Raqqa to liberation from Nazis in Germany. This war isn’t even over yet.

Well they all want independent state based on their ethnicities because they don’t feel they’re treated equal in current position.

That’s even more complicated. I don’t know what’s the solution really. I think there needs to be peace first and Assad’s regime needs to be gone.
