ryanripley 86,575 Posted October 14, 2017 Share Posted October 14, 2017 A teenager has become the first to move into a ‘micro-home’ built in a bid to tackle Britain’s homelessness. The 186-square-foot space – which takes inspiration from yachts and first-class aeroplane cabins – cost just £40,000 to build. It has now been handed over as a place for 18-year-old Kieran to live in Barbourne, Worcester, in the hope he can start to rebuild his life after living on the streets for a year. The project, believed to be the first of its kind in the world, is being hailed as a cure to the the country’s homelessness and housing crisis. If the pilot is successful, the homes – called iKozies – could be installed across the rest of the UK. Kieran, who spent time at a YMCA hostel before moving into temporary accommodation, said: ‘I’m ecstatic, genuinely so happy to have my own space. Tenants will have to take the responsibility for paying for rent, water bills and food in a bid to teach them how to survive independently. The slick design includes a bedroom, a full-furnished kitchen, a bathroom ‘module’ and an entertainment zone. On one hand, I am very happy to see a concept in order to tackle homelessness, in particular youth homelessness. This is a great way to help out those most vulnerable, and giving them a home and a sense of somewhere to be proud of etc. That's really awesome. On the other hand, the UK has the smallest newbuilds in Europe (88 sq m per dwelling, compared to 137 sq m per house in Denmark), so I hope that this small size is merely for those in desperate need, rather than a race to the bottom for houses built for the general population.
