A mind f*ck in music history

I doubt many here would care since the incident is from Hong Kong a long time ago, but regardless I still want to share this fascinating observation of mine:

To summarise, back in 1989™, two Hong Kong pop divas Priscilla Chan, and the much more famous and late Anita Mui (who starred beside Jackie Chan in Rumble in the Bronx) both each covered the same Japanese song from Jpop idol Masahiko Kondo, in Cantonese...under different song titles and lyrics. Anita's version was also the theme song to A Better Tomorrow 3, in which she also starred in alongside Chow Yun-fat.

What's even more fascinating, is that they both performed their covers on the same exact award show in the same year!

Anita's:

Priscilla's:

From what I can gather, it seems like Priscilla's won more awards that night. But I prefer Anita's for some reason.

I can't imagine how audiences back then would even react to this! It simply blows my mind! There's probably never anything like this that can even happen again, at least not in western pop.

This reminds me a lot of when country star Trisha Yearwood and other country/pop star Leann Rimes had the song "How Do I Live" released at the same time. Both had their own versions (which were basically exactly the same).   One was used in the movie "Con Air". They both basically had the same hit as both versions became popular.

Yeah it reminded me of that too. It was like some sort of rivalry. But it'd be even more surreal to watch them perform on the same award show.

They were both nominated. Leann performed it and right after, Trisha won the Grammy for it. Lmao. It's hilarious.  Very similar situations. This and the thing you posted are basically like reality show competitions lol.

In fact, if I stretch a bit, with the opening guitar riffs and drum patterns, they almost sound similar...it's like they are parallel universes... :giggle:
