Amazon $5 Billion New Headquarters & 50,000 Jobs Spurs Massive City Wars

About 20 large cities in North America are making agressive bidding wars to hope they land Amazons much hyped 2nd headquarters

 

The new headquarters will be a $5 Billion construction project and will employ close to $50,000 people and large cities want to do everything they can in offering bribes to amazon to make sure they get the huge economic win

 

Amazon Demands: 

 

- A city with at least 1 Million people to select labor from

- Educated workforce in high tech

- Friendly Business Environment

- International Airport Nearby

 

Amazon will also consider which munincipality and State/Province offers greatest "incentives"

Our Capitalist society. To get such an economic win we have to compete to give biggest bribe and "incentives" to a company thats already so massive and wealthy. Offering the rich more money thats just wrong   

 

My City Toronto is one of the bidders. My Mayor better bribe the sh*t out of them and offer some real dam good payola

50,000 employees... lets say average salary $50,000 a year (many tech jobs are above average salary but for sake of argument lets be conservative)...

 

Thats $2.5 Billion in annual wages for that city metro 😱

Canadas Corporate taxes Federally are way lower than USAs (15% vs 35% in America)... But my Province has added a lot of rules, regulations and labor laws last 10 years businesses dont like that might count against us. Also our green hydro has become expensive AF  

 

We do have a booming tech sector thanks to low taxes and educated workforce and lots of skilled immigrants we accept

 

I still feel that a red state in America is more likely to win the bid tho

As if Amazon pays any taxes (apologies for regurgitating a stupid Trump line but it's kinda true).

They paid a little over 400 million in income tax in 2016, yet make 136 billion USD in revenue  (that's less than half a percent when the income tax rate for a corporation is %15).

Yet this HQ is pulling my boss right *eye roll* as if Amazon needs a tax break lmao

I think taxes for corporations are on profits not gross revenue...

 

if they make $100 Billion in revenue but have $95 Billion in expenses only $5 Billion would be taxable at the 15% rate so taxes would only be $750 Million

 

I invest a lot in stocks I know. Many companies have only a 2% to 5% profit margin due to competition ud be surprised...

 

They make a lot of money in total due to large size but breaking it down by units it isnt huge. So the taxes they pay end up being a tiny portion of over-all revenue

 

Then theres loopholes... invest in expansion and count as expenses to avoid taxes  but that has benefits too tho cuz it does promote economic growth those loopholes, the Government just looses on money tho
