Trans teacher removed from classroom, wanted to be called "Mx"

A Florida school district this week transferred a fifth-grade teacher from working with children into a classroom with adults after the educator requested to be addressed with gender-neutral pronouns.

The teacher’s preferences — using the prefix Mx. and the pronouns “they, them, their instead of he, his, she, hers” — had been met with support from some Canopy Oaks Elementary parents and complaints from others, including “a handful” who pulled their children from the classroom, according to a district spokesman. The Leon County school district said teacher Chloe Bressack’s transfer was a mutual decision.

I know I should care more about the fact that there were parents so not okay with the teacher they pulled their children from the class...but.

"Mx"? How is that pronounced? "Em-ecks"? "Mix"?

And why do all gender neutral pronounces have to use the letter "x". It just seems, like, I don't wanna say edgy, but edgy. I personally prefer singular "They/Them"

Though, I don't know how that would translate to a Ms/Mr scheme. Maybe like Mike Tyson trying to say Ms? "Mith"?

90% of people out there are not familiar with the concept of being gender-neutral or using gender-neutral pronouns and I can see how trying to teach this stuff to little kids can be confusing for them. If the teacher is sensitive to people not using gender-neutral pronouns, then I think it's probably best that they moved them from a elementary class to adult education class where the students can be more sensitive to the teacher's preferences.

Personally, I think the whole situation could have been avoided if the teacher just told the students to call them "Teacher Chloe" or something similar, would have been less confusing for the kids and probably wouldn't have caused any issues with the parents.

As a gay guy, wtf!? Using Mx (tf) as a term to be called with fifth graders is ridiculous. Fudge, when I was in, 5th grade, I had bigger problems to worry about, such as "Why is my penis growing, why is hair growing down there, why does it grow hard and I cant stop it! What the fudge is "going through puberty" even mean?" I accept non binary people, but it's getting to the point that youre trying to force it down our throats. Its like us, gays, saying, "Cuz im gay" after every sentence. We dont go around saying "Call me Mr. Gay Rubberheartt". We get it, youre non binary, no need to shove it down our throat.

Those gender neutral pronouns and things like Mx aren't going to catch on anytime soon unfortunately. Languages are a natural reflection of the concepts of our world. As a matter of fact, throughout history people have traditionally referred to men as he and to women as she. Back in the days the concept of transgender might existed, but as it was considered "not the norm" people had no pronouns for it. In the course of time the binary gender pronouns have conventionalised and so it's going to be a hard and maybe even impossible task to impose something new on a language. Also, English is a language in which gender neutral pronouns exist. What about other languages that don't have these pronouns? Spanish only has él, ella or ellos in the plural to refer to either men or men and women. German has er (he), sie (she) and es (it), but the latter is degrading to use for a person and sie as a plural form wouldn't work because in German it is used as formal "you". SO as much as I'm for equality for all people of all gender identities, I don't think things like gender neutral they or Mx are going to happen anytime soon.

You can be gender neutral all you want and I'll be supportive of that but making up words is the very definition of "extra" and is cringey and eye-roll inducing.

I get the "x" in latinx but besides that I just don't find it necessary.

Them/they is very neutral and it doesn't sound completely odd, even though it's traditionally plural it still works; I use it in my essays all the time.

Being genderfluid/-f*ck is not ridiculous, but demanding to be called by a pronoun that doesn't exist in an elementary school kinda is. This could have been avoided if the teacher just asked to be called Teacher. Name.

They are trans correct? But gender-neutral? I know they aren't mutually exclusive, but if you're trans and dealing with a real world situation and not an idealistic one, it's time to do what you need to do. I don't think it's great or the best thing, but sexual identity comes before gender identity, and gender isn't a basic human right but rather a societal construct. 

That's maybe harsh, but until the world catches up, it's a time to survive when you can, you still have to pay bills, you still need a job. If you want the treatment you think you deserve, work in the environment you think you will get it in, if there isn't one, make sure you're fighting where you can to make it known you want there to be one. Don't risk your well being if it's not going to make a big statement.
