At this point, I have zero respect for anyone who still supports this man. ETA: Before I start getting hounded with BS messages saying I have no place to talk about this since I'm Finnish, as has happened multiple times in the past (presumably) due to my username, I actually have dual citizenship in the US and Finland and currently reside in the US. And I also happen to support the 1st amendment, no matter the extent to which Trump attempts to eradicate it. His overall approval rating is abysmal, it's in the range of 30%, which is so low it indicates even many within the GOP don't approve of his behavior. However, those redneck hillbillies are unfortunately not budging. They, along with Evangelical Christians, are his remaining supporters. But given how loud, bigoted, and violent they are, it's still alarming. ETA: Obviously, he still has the support of the KKK/white supremacists as well, but unfortunately the majority of those belong in the redneck hillbilly and/or Evangelical Christian categories. McCain supports the party, not its president and he's made that abundantly clear from the get go in regards to Trump. Even if he says he supports Trump, it's out of party loyalty not legitimate endorsement. Same goes for McConnell. Neither of them like Trump, most establishment republicans despise him, but he's their president and they want a unified front against democrats. So it's playing politics is all. They would not have stumped so hard for Jeb if they even remotely liked Trump. Fact is is he was voted the candidate and they didn't want to splinter voters like what happened with Hillary and Bernie so the begrudgingly united behind the lummox. Yeah, it's party over country but it's never Trump over party. Let the record show, though, I absolutely despise Mitch McConnell and think he's the most destructive force to bipartisan efforts in the House currently (sure there are others but he's literally the leader of this charge). For these people holding the fate of the entire country in their hands, it's the action they take (or don't take) that matters, not their intent. I don't care if every single Republican personally hates Trump and denounces his rhetoric if they're still going to vote in his favor. The GOP is in charge of both houses of Congress; the Democrats will never have enough votes to stop this madman in the WH unless the GOP steps up and collectively does their job (i.e., work for, rather than against, the American people, and uphold the freaking Constitution). I concur with all of that with the caveat that their opinion matters going into midterms next year. It's really going to be a referendum on Trump since they haven't gotten anything done. So it comes down to them using his political capital to get votes or scorning it for votes. Seeing which way republicans up for election go will be interesting as it could essentially be a vote of no confidence in their own president and may very well happen as he poses monumental risk for a lot of these congressmen. Like you said elsewhere, his popularity numbers are abysmal. I doubt the republicans are going to want his backing just like when dems tried separating themselves from Obama in '12.
