Uber stripped of its license to operate in London

Uber is to be sensationally stripped of its licence to operate in London in a huge blow to the ride-hailing firm. 

The dramatic announcement today by Transport for London chiefs will dismay 3.5 million Londoners who have come to rely on cheaper rides. 

The decision also raises questions over the future of 40,000 minicab drivers who ply a trade with Uber in the capital.

Uber’s lawyers will now pore over the decision which is almost certain to be challenged in a lengthy courtroom battle.

TfL ruled that Uber was “not fit and proper” to hold a private hire licence and had shown a “lack of corporate responsibility” in relation to public safety.

Its licence is currently due to expire next Saturday, September 30. The app firm has 21 days to appeal the decision. However, they can continue to operate on London’s streets while the legal process is exhausted. 

In May Uber’s licence was extended for just four months, instead of the usual five years, raising uncertainty about its long-term future in London.

London keeps doing everything they can to get rid of Uber because they're killing off the black cab market which are slower and more expensive and harder to access. Stupid and irresponsible.

One of the fundamental reasons is that they were a target just because they operate at cheap rates. I'd much rather be £10 for a small trip with Uber than £16 for the same trip with a commercial taxi company.

Uber is awkward in London though, there’s not many places to stop for the drivers so I’ve witnessed many park illegally and my own park illegally when I’ve visited. Uber is the future but the drivers need to be made aware of where it is safe to stop and collect people in a city where parking is limited, riders also need to be more patient and be willing to walk to a slightly further spot to be collected.

What I mean is Uber has extremely low standards when it comes to their drivers. I've dealt with racists, homophobes, religious zealots, and people who frankly have no business dealing with people daily. I've had drivers who scream at people on the road and I one time had a driver drop me off blocks away from my destination because his app glitched, and when I told him that I would just enter the destination again and guide him he just went on a rant how that wasn't possible (it was bs because I've had issues like this before and it is possible to enter your destination again) and I had to get off because he might have people waiting (which again was bs because the sound was on on his app so we would have heard if a was person added to his list). I ended being very late for my lab so that really pissed me off.

It's pretty much because they grew so fast so quickly that they completely disregard the screening process. This was a rant but I hate Uber

i guess the drivers in london are just way more polite

i've had a lot of really kind drivers that let us play our own music, drink in their car and even chat to us

Uber don't hire people, you join uber as a driver and as long as you pass background checks you're in. Drivers can be kicked out by getting consistently low ratings.

I just started using Uber in Chicago a few weeks ago, and I liked how you get info about the driver, plus ratings from other users. There is no incentive for them to take longer routes because the rate is predetermined, unlike regular taxis. And with a regular cab, I have no idea who is showing up or how they've treated customers before. I feel bad for London losing this service, because losing options is never good for a customer.

Everyone has positive experiences with Uber except for me.   I just have bad luck I guess.
