tomsches 17,563
Let's use this thread to discuss the ongoing developments of the Catalonian Independence Movement and the Spanish constitutional crisis. I am not from Spain myself, but I've lived there for some time and I am deeply interested in what's happening there. So I would like to hear some of your opinions on the issue. Do you think that Catalonian Independence is possible? As a Spaniard, what do you think about Catalonia leaving the country? Discuss, gurls BTW, here's a short summary of the crisis: The 2017 Spanish constitutional crisis is an ongoing political conflict between the Government of Spain and the Generalitat of Catalonia over the issue of the 2017 Catalan independence referendum, starting after the law intending to allow such a referendum was denounced by the Spanish government under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and subsequently suspended by the Constitutional Court until it ruled on the issue.[2][3] The Catalan government under President Carles Puigdemont has announced that neither central Spanish authorities nor the courts would halt their plans and that it intends to hold the vote anyway, sparking a legal backlash that has quickly spread from the Spanish and Catalan governments to Catalan municipalities—as local mayors were urged by the Generalitat to provide logistical support and help for the electoral process to be carried out—as well as to the Constitutional Court, the High Court of Justice of Catalonia and state prosecutors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Spanish_constitutional_crisis

GagaSkeletonWay 2,086
My mind is really divided, to be honest. I don't like at all how Catalonian politicians are literally ignoring the law and the constitution; hence, I am on the opinion that this referendum is completely illegal and should be prohibited, which is what I think it's going to happen. But I believe in the freedom of the people and the fact that the government should just represent what the majority of the population want/need, so this problem shouldn't be ignored; politics must talk about it and come to an agreement and then let the people who leave in Catalonia decide but let's do it in a legitimate way. (I am from Spain btw)

JoanneMonster 9,075
I am from Catalonia and I'm neutral because I don't really know much about the topic. EDIT: Okay now I really want independence, Spain, sweetie, wyd BUT I do think Catalonia should be able to vote and decide its future. If the results are ''no'', good, if the results are ''yes'', good, because it will be a democratic voting and that's what I want. I am disgusted at Spain for not letting us choose our future. Catalan politicians are ignoring the law, but no one is giving them another solution. If the law is not democratic I think it's the right thing to not follow it, Spain shouldn expect to say ''no, you are not leaving'' to Catalonia and expect everyone to be happy. If theres finally a way to vote (which I hope it happens), Catalonia has to be the only one who's voting. I've heard a lot of nonsense from other people from Spain saying ''If catalan people vote, we should too''... And that's a big excuse me no. Every part of Spain has it's different rules and stuff, Catalan people don't vote for Madrid's president, and people from Madrid don't vote for Catalonia's president. Why should people from Madrid vote for Catalonia's future? They are not from here and have nothing to do with it. One of the things I feel with the rest of Spain (not everyone of course, but in general) is a lot of hate towards Catalonia. I've literally seen debate shows on TV that say that we ignore and bully people that speak in spanish at school. Or that everything is in catalan and you feel like you are outside Spain when you enter Catalonia. Of course we speak catalan bc it's our language, as well as spanish (eveyone in Catalonia knows catalan and spanish), but everything on the streets is written in catalan, spanish and english (because of the tourists). Of course there are also few things only written in catalan, but what did you expect if that's our language? when you go to France you don't get mad at them because things are in French. Henri Bardot 3,990
Well, I am Mexican and I don't live in Catalonia so I don't have a "valid" opinion, but I think that Spain should let Catalonia choose their future... If they want to make their own country, they should let them. pooiota

The thing is: Catalonia after all IS a part of Spain, and to some degree I understand that the rest of Spain also has a say in this (I mean in the independence or not itself. The referendum itself should be celebrated and not suspended by Spain). Catalonia wants to leave because it's the richer part, Spain don't want them to leave because they would lose the richer part. (this is simplified of course, there are other reasons) The whole situation clearly won't go away (independently of whether it should or not), so I think there should be a referendum where Spain as a whole votes. Unfortunately for the Catalan Independents, that would probably mean that "NO" would win.

In the UK, the Scottish people voted to stay but they were the ones voting for their future, not the entire country. The same happened in the Brexit, the UK citizens voted they wanted to leave, not all the European Union citizens, it wouldn't be fair.

Spain works by autonom communities, Catalonia votes for its own laws and not for Andalucia's laws (Even tho they all have the same spanish laws, but they also have their own). For example, in Catalonia bull fighting is prohibited because catalan people voted for it to be prohibited, if the whole Spain would have voted, sadly it would still be legal because there are a lot of conservative communities that believe in it. It's like if a few years ago you went to the US and a state was going to vote to allow gay marriage to happen (imagine the rest of the country was against it and voted as well). Gay marriage wouldn't be legal there, because one state wanted it and the rest didn't, and instead of letting that state do their thing that would not affect them, they didn't let them decide their future that hurt no one. It's like if I got to choose what my friend is ordering at a restaurant, he should make his own decisions and I should deal with what he's eating even if I dont like it I See You
