The only similarity is the fact the bass in both songs has a three note step pattern. Applause starts on the lowest of the three notes and then ascends before descending, and Jonas' song starts on the highest note of the pattern and descends before ascending. These are pretty fundamental motifs in music, and probably the only reason some people think they sound similar aside from having a similar chord progression as well, but aside from that, they are COMPLETELY different in sound and melodic structure.
