Swando 300
I think i'm one of those people who really didn't think it stood out that much It felt much more like a horror-comedy than an actual horror movie. Most of the horror elements came from tension driven moments only centered around jump scares. The problem for me was these moments never got much time to breath before one of the characters or Pennywise made a joke. While i found the acting overall great, there were a few moments i questioned the kid's reaction to the things happening. Simply saying something along the lines of "ouch" when your arm get's broken exemplifies it perfectly. That being said, i noticed a great deal of effort was put into placing "easter eggs" into the different scenes in order to pay respects to the book. Overall i won't deny it praise from doing that since it creates depth. I also think the movie did well at establishing the setting. BUT, i simply cannot take people seriously if they call this a proper horror movie. The amount of comedic relief moments and the overall fantasy feel stops it from being classified as that. I see it as something akin to Evil Dead (not the remake).

It was the kind of horror that relied on things that might have feared you back as a child. That's why I loved that most creepy parts were actually the scenery/ and the fact most of the fears you have seen come off as eerie and dark. Not something you would be jumping for. But I get where you are coming from. Crossfit

If i had gone into the theater expecting more of a 'Harry Potter with a horror twist' i would probably have enjoyed it a lot more. Ultimately i can understand why it's getting so many good reviews. The lighter elements makes it more enjoyable/approachable for the broader audience.
n0ne 13,105
It = 8.5-9 First off, it wasn't a straight horror movie. It was half horror movie, half coming of age drama/comedy. But I really enjoyed both elements so I didn't mind. The Good: The acting was fantastic especially Richy (the Stranger Things actor, Bill (the lead boy), Bev, and It. The chemistry between the Losers Club was flawless. They felt like real friends. The characters were great as well. They were distinct from each other with their own personalities and backgrounds. Their interactions were fun to watch; the Losers Club really seemed like that they really cared for each other and work wonderfully together. And It was genuinely creepy but there was something surprisingly charming and humorous about him. The humor spread throughout really worked and helped as relief. I surprised how often they cursed but it felt very natural. The scares worked most of the time. And even if they didn't always startle me, the atmosphere and creeepiness was always there. The special effects, cinematography, and editing were superb. The camera angles, close ups, and movements really were the foundation of the atmosphere, scares, suspense, and drama. I found myself really stoping to admire the camera work multiple times during the movie. And the narrative and plot development was throughoughly engaging; I never found myself bored. I was fully invested and interested; sometimes trying to predict what happened next. And I was satisfied with how it ended and looking forward to what's next to come. The Bad: I don't remember the miniseries that well and haven't read the book so this issue may be fixed in Chapter 2. But I didn't like how It and the town's background/history weren't fully explained. Especially what It is exactly and some things concerning his actions. There was also some cliches that I couldn't help but notice. Like stupid character decisions, just standing there and doing nothing next a scary thing, over dramatic music, and some predictable jump scares. Conclusion: Overall the pros majorly outweigh the cons. And the film was a wonderful experience. I'd definitely recommend it. It almost feels like a family oriented horror movie even though it's definitely most suitable for adults. Its more than a horror movie; being something fans of dramas and comedies would enjoy too. I'd definitely rewatch it, most likely even buy it to watch it years to come. I'm definitely siked for Chapter 2. "My people… need to let our bitchiness out. n0ne 13,105
Am I the only one who thinks Richie and Eddie will turn out to be a couple in Chapter 2? They just seemed like they were the closet to each and each other's best friend. Having a gay couple would be a great way to modernize the film and add an interesting spin on the characters. It also would be funny to see Richie turn out being gay after being so blunt and heteronormative. It'll probably won't happen but it would be something cool and fresh. I know there wasn't any gay characters but considering this film is different; especially the timeline, I wouldn't be surprised by modern touches and updates added. The novel took place in the later 50s and mid 80s. The miniseries took place in 1960 and 1990. While movies will be taking place in 1988/89 and the 2015/16, so it leaves them with a lot of space to add many modern influences and events. I'm not really expecting the gay thing too much though. I watched the film today and not having read the book, I too was disappointed that It and Derry's backstory/history weren't touched on. Apparently Bill revealed in an interview that they originally filmed a scene for the [very disturbing] backstory on Pennywise and how he came to be, but was cut

Tadeo 72
The movie is good but also way too overrated. Sadly movies like i.e. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is way superior and faired poorly at the box office. They're completely different genres but IT is good but nowhere good as people are painting it to be. The movie is poorly edited which at times makes the movie feel boring and slow paced. Pennywise is great and so are the kids but something's off.
