Kamala Harris co-sponsors Bernie's single-payer health care bill

Washington (CNN) - Sen. Kamala Harris is the first Democrat to announce she'll co-sponsor Sen. Bernie Sanders' single-payer health care bill when it's introduced in September.

The California freshman -- seen as a rising star in the party and a 2020 presidential prospect -- revealed her plans to back Sanders' legislation at a town hall Wednesday night in Oakland. 

"Here, I'll break some news: I intend to co-sponsor the Medicare-for-all bill, because it's just the right thing to do," Harris said. She announced her support for Sanders' single-payer plan at the end of her town hall and joked that "somebody should tell my staff." 

Her co-sponsorship is another sign that the Democratic Party is increasingly embracing a shift away from the private health insurance market and toward a government-run program. The issue is poised to become a major litmus test for its presidential candidates in 2020.

Working class whites who feel the economy and world is against them is the reason Trump won.

They weren't the reason Hillary lost the election. It was a combination of Hillary's issues, Russian meddling, and gerrymandering/voter restrictions.

And who sensationalized Hillary's issues? Trump supporters surely didn't need to do all they did to taint Hillary's image when Bernie Bros were doing just that and far worse. Party unification or lack thereof was one of the reasons she lost. Of course the reasons you stated were part of it but let's not act like Bernie Bros were saints when "Birdie Sanders" took a fat L in June.

There's always going to be fringe groups that don't like the primary outcomes. The RNC had #NeverTrump, an even larger "split" in their support and he still won.

This. For **** sake Paul Ryan, Romney, and many top Republicans distanced and denounced Trump and he STILL WON.

Anyway, this is a smart move for her since  she'll keep the more liberal side of the Democratic party satisfied. This will become a litmus test. Let's hope people like Clinton come out in support.

It's definitely a smart move if she's planning to run for President/Vice on someone else's ticket. It's too early to assume anything, but given some more opportunities over the next few years, Kamala is definitely on a short list of considerables.

Some have said Cory Booker.
