Joker Origin Movie

This is no laughing matter: Warner Bros. has tapped The Hangover filmmaker Todd Phillips to co-write and possibly direct an origin movie of the classic Batman villain The Joker.

For example, the Joker is already part of the Suicide Squad movie franchise and is played by Jared Leto. The Joker movie in development, under the plan, would feature another actor and be made under another budget category. At this stage, the story is set in Gotham City in the early 1980s.

The new label would give Warners leeway to make more DC-oriented projects, unconstrained by continuity.

One report stated that filmmaker Martin Scorsese was producing the project, but sources tell THR that his involvement is far from assured.

I am not a fan of this. We have "The Killing Joke" and its the best origin story we have about the joker even though its animated. Plus, Jared Leto was the 2nd best Joker since Ledgers so...

I don't know how I feel about Todd Phillips directing, majority of the films he directed were comedy and I'm fearing for a comedy maybe dark comedy kind of angle which eh sounds interesting but as an example they replaced the original directors (Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who've worked on 21 jump street and the Lego movie) for the Han Solo film because despite the intent for a light hearted buddy action film it was clearly not following the style that most Star Wars film are known for.

Uh Red Wine... Convict... Gah Gah...

You just pointed out yourself why we're getting this movie. The origin story was animated. Normies don't watch animated movies (well, not comic styled ones anymore)

Not to mention all continuities are different. This is probably going to be different from other origin stories.

They explained in the Deadline article that Warner is looking to make DC movies under a pocket universe that have no continuity with the DCEU.

Which sounds like a mess.

But hey, at least we won't have to see Jared's Joker again in this one :giggle:

Featuring another actor that is not Jared Leto? I don't like that decision, if they keep switching actors for the same role, the actor may never be seen as the superhero/supervillain and hence inhibit public recognition.

I don't think it matters. Jared was a "rebound" actor, I think. He was a replacement actor until they could find someone better. He honestly had too  much to live up to after Heath Ledger died for the role. Not to mention there was too much hype for his role, when he was on the screen for less than 5 minutes.

Also it is an origins movie, so it'd make sense that it's a different actor. Plus I'm not sure if Suicide Squad shares the same continuity.

Normies are normal people.

And normal people believe they have to stop watching cartoons after a certain point in life.

If it's part of the DC Extended Universe, then it should be Jared Leto though, Jared is quite a dedicated actor, I'm not saying his performance in Suicide Squad was flawless, to be honest it was too short to showcase any kind of brilliance.

But I believe Jared can pull it off, provided he works hard enough with a good script and directing.

Like I said, the canon could be different. This Joker and Leto's Joker have entire possibilities to be different. That entire universe is complicated as hell.

We have several comic book peeps, but I don't know if they specialize in batman or not.

River

I don't like this..

1. they will expose his name - I'm 100% sure they'll do that.

2. If it's not part of the universe so they need a new Batman because Batman made the Joker and nothing else..

3. The Killing Joke it's the best origin story.

4. I don't like that it's in the 80s..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

REALITY

I'm a huge, huge, huge Batman fan, but I feel like this is unnecessary. I'm not a Batman fanboy in that I'll defend any/everything he does nor will I just like something because "it's Batman," but I just find the whole mythology and the whole story of Batman, and Gotham City, exciting.

That being said, I get from a business perspective they want to keep things relatively simple and have the same few characters in the movies so that they can expand upon it later, but I feel like Batman's whole mythos has been so overexposed. Like, I don't really see a reason to make this movie besides the cash—which I'm sure is enough for any sort of executive.

I'd like to see new characters come on to the big screen, I don't know, maybe the Titans; Justice League Dark; hell, maybe even characters within the Batman universe that don't get a whole lot of exposure (i.e. Nightwing, who is actually going to get his own movie).
