It has no place in America. And as I have said many times before: no matter the color of our skin, we all live under the same laws, we all salute the same great flag, and we are all made by the same Almighty God. We must love each other, show affection for each other, and unite together in condemnation of hatred, bigotry, and violence. ...Racism is evil, and those who cause violence, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans." @SISTERV Ah, yes. What a courageous hero. Took the man three days to partially condemn Nazis and racist confederates (who are traitors, might I add), and took him 8 months to fire an actual racist from his staff. Meanwhile he slandered Nordstroms faster than you could say Ferrari when they stopped selling his daughter's ugly bags.

Buddy 5,686
15 minutes ago, Ziggy said: Well, in her case she was trying to defend Trump defending racists and nazi groups lol The fact is that there is not a comparable moral equivalent to nazis and white supremacists, and Trump is trying to paint Antifa as that in order to justify his own support for a particular side. He's trying to level what is fundamentally an uneven playing field. Antifa condones and promotes acts of violence, yes, and they are militant. They do rally behind ideas that anarchic a nd anti-capitalist, but nowhere in their motivation is there the baseless extermination of a group of people. That's what this is about: equivalence. Just because both sides have violent players does not mean they are equally at fault or deserving of condemnation. The severity and ferocity with which one group acts needs to be taken into account here. As for what Melissa is saying here, she's right, there is nothing a white person can say and that's fine; this is not our time to speak but our time to listen. We don't have the answers so I think it would be in our best interest to be respectful and listen to what minority groups have to say about what should be done rather than unilaterally act as if we know what their best interests should be. That in itself is mildly racist as it disregards their validity of their experience and perspective. Sometimes the most respectful thing you can do is to listen and I think this is one of those times (hence why I liked when Gaga asked on Twitter what she could do to help the black community; she knows she doesn't know and isn't going to pretend as though she does). I didn't see the full context of her words. I don't think this Melissa girl is a bad person at all and believe her 100% that she does not care about the color of ones skin. The thing with politics is people feel an obligation to support their candidate unconditionally, which I why I feel she's in a fluster. I strongly believe a reason why America is in such political turmoil at the moment because so many refuse to constructively criticize their own movements. Yes, he shouldn't be leveling that playing field and I'd appreciate it if we would use this more as a moment to criticize neo-nazism and white supremacy, because we haven't seen a public display of such to this extent in probably decades. Antifa do deserve to be criticized and called out, though, because they certainly did help escalate things, and they give neo-nazis and white supremacists the excuse that there is a public display of violence on the opposing side. Liberals truly need to publicly denounce Antifa and separate ourselves as much as we possibly can. No just sweeping them under the rug, DENOUNCE them. We should have just allowed these white supremacists to do their thing, because that sort of hate will speak for itself. I don't agree that it's white people's "time to listen". There is no such thing as solely listening in the internet age, and listening and speaking are not mutually exclusive.

I am white and people of color have been silenced for far too long while white people keeping their mouths open and saying what needs to be done has always been a thing. I think for once we can be quiet and allow those who have been silenced to speak how they feel and what they think should be done. It's only fair really if you think about it. And I am more than fine with being quiet and giving those less privileged the chance to speak. Lord knows white people have got to speak enough. This isn't to say we should be silenced, only give others the chance to speak rather than thinking we should always get to and be able to.

But people have to be careful that they do not push white people away from involvement. POC will always have the upper hand in speaking when it comes to issues that concern POC, but white people should be apart of the dialogue and not pushed away. Social progress always requires the majority to be integrated and on board, and many people are not considering that anymore simply out of spite. When my tweet blew up, I had a lot of POC try to respectfully educate me on their experiences and include me in the dialogue, which is how it should be done. But the majority were just like "this ignorant white boy, **** white people" and tossed me to the side, then had people tell me that that is ok because I as a white person cannot tell POC how to feel or react. There is a difference between white people listening more, which they should, and silencing/disintegrating them.

I agree with everything you said here, which is why I stated that I didn't mean white people should be silenced, only that we should do more listening and also understand that we don't know what it's like to live in the experiences of a person of color. There's obvious ignorance on both sides, and POC should not be saying those things or trying to silence people and not allow them to speak out in ways that challenge racism and white supremacy. Although I do understand their frustration and anger, just saying some of this things and trying to silence people isn't a very useful or productive way to approach these conversations. There is no such thing as solely listening in the internet age, and listening and speaking are not mutually exclusive. I'm sorry, you misunderstand me. We actually share the same opinion so I'm sorry for the miscommunication. What I mean by listening is listening to what others have to say and then acting by their word and what they'd like. Actually being champions for the cause instead of manufacturing the one that we believe is best. So I think we're in agreement there lol The listening and speaking bit, I whole-heartedly agree with. I just mean listen first and don't speak before you listen. I also agree with your sentiments about criticizing movements. That's important and something I get **** for a lot lol it annoys people haha I think specifically democrats need to denounce Antifa because on the spectrum of liberalism, they're just radicals. They don't align with the democrats so an alliance makes no sense. However, I don't think now is the time to publicly do that as it would muddle the message against supremacy and nazism. Once this dies down a bit then they can so what they mean is clear and a focused denouncement devoid of drama from surrounding current events. I do think that some of what Antifa has to say is important, though, and in most historical cases, it is the radicals showing force that have been able to make a difference and secure societal advancement for their cause. I think that even if you don't believe in their tactics, their goals can be understood and synthesized into a tamer political opinion. But, yes, liberals should denounce them as liberals aren't radical. They literally believe in the opposite goal of Antifa, that being working within the system rather than deconstructing it. Still, I think there's merit in understanding a variety of perspectives (within reason of them not being crimes against humanity lol). Maybe we disagree slightly on that point lol
