Her team went for the catchiest songs which were absolutely not a representation of how Katy decribed the album or her new persona

I don't think any songs would have mattered, this era was bound to flop. all great pop stars have a flop, and then they either bounce back or keep falling forever. we will have to wait and see, but the music was just not that great IMO. pendulum and roulette are good but i see neither being smash hits tho.

Scrap the whole album, write new songs then maybe....the album is terrible I couldn't even finish most of the songs and they all felt the same to me. The production is nice but overall theres no great songs on the album, just two tolerable tracks.

I do like a lot of the songs on Witness, but commercially they're not viable.

I can't explain it but there's something in Witness' songs that make them sound dated. It's the same problem that plagued Ari's Into You.
