Miel 15,009
Gaga does exhibit white feminism from time to time. But, but, I really truly believes that she puts in a lot of effort to understand the experiences of other marginalized communities. Shame about Azealia, though. 3 points in and ready for more
StrawberryBlond 15,564
Can't even be bothered to mention examples of what she's talking about. Classic sign of someone who's just hating because they love to hate. I mean, Lena Dunham, I get somewhat, but Gaga? She has supported any kind of oppressed group and has always given the impression of being someone who likes to bring everyone together without boundaries. Azealia is under the delusion of the "white woman = white feminist" myth that unfortunately circulates all too often. "Non-intersectional feminist" would be a far better term as what I have seen lately is an uptick in black feminists who only give a damn about issues affecting black women and think every other race needs to take a seat. I have never seen a white feminist who is this racist, confrontational and non-encompassing. Just because a white woman doesn't talk about issues affecting women that don't look like her constantly does not mean that she doesn't know these problems exist. One of the biggest misconceptions about sexism is that white women are immune to most of it, that nothing bad happens to white women in the west. It's this myth that makes it so difficult for white women to speak out about anything bad that happens to them. Being told things like "You can't have been raped because you live in a good neighbourhood and come from a nice family" is all too sadly common among white women. Every woman matters, no matter her race, nationality, age, religion, wealth status, background. All true feminists believe this. If a there's a woman out there who doesn't believe this, she isn't a white feminist, she's just bad at feminism, period. 5 hours ago, Sam Dey said: tbh I can't blame her for thinking that. I get where she's coming from. I can't stand that side of gaga either but that doesn't mean I dislike her. It takes more than that for me to dislike Lady Gaga 47 minutes ago, Miel said: Gaga does exhibit white feminism from time to time. Because I literally can't think of any.

There were small things from a few years past that I can't think of specifically. She's said a few times about how we're all the same underneath (maybe it was the BTW video's idealism in the "one race"), but that was ages ago. Maybe when she talked about third-wave, I'm not really too sure. I'm not knocking on Gaga- I agree with you, that although she is a white woman I wouldn't necessarily call her a "white feminist", as she has shown nothing but compassion and open-mindedness towards many issues and marginalized communities. She is probably, in fact, the most openly knowledgable pop musician I can think of who actively communicates these issues. Hell, she's even actively supported #BlackLivesMatters when a lot of other figures (especially white celebrities) would only graze its surface, or not even talk about it at all. 3 points in and ready for more

Saying we're all the same underneath is the exact opposite of racism. Essentially, it means: "Why are we focusing on the superficial exterior when what matters is what's inside?" That's the problem with society now, people are picking up on completely harmless phrases and finding fault with them even though there's no other way they could possibly be taken if anyone had an ounce of intelligence. And referring to feminism in waves is just outdated and pointless now. It's more of a reference to the generation in which feminism took centre stage and also the generation in which you experienced feminism for the first time, so technically, any millenial woman is a third wave feminist. It doesn't matter what wave you're from, it only seems to be men who enquire that now. Women know it means nothing, especially as it lumps women into categories, like we all think the same way in each category, which most of us know isn't true. Feminism is much more complex than what wave it's from. I march to the beat of my own drum, no one puts a label on my individual brand of feminism. But just know that referring to waves of feminism has nothing to do with white feminism. If we are going to talk about white feminism, I think Taylor Swift is a much better representation of that. But I still wouldn't call her that. I'd just say she's missing the point of feminism.
