That was a promotional campaign, and that's why it sold 1.2 during the first week in the US. Joanne had barely any promotion compared to BTW. Born This Way sold 1.2 million in the first week because of the promotion and because she was at the peak of her career and the biggest artist in the world. No other album released since then has topped or even matched the promotion she did for it. But we're in 2017 now. The industry has changed, her career has changed, the people around her have changed and her life has changed. She doesn't need to overwork herself and overexpose herself to sell her music. Gaga had many performances, outfits, interviews, etc, but I guess we ignore things that we just don't like. At least you said your peace in a mature way unlike some people do. The Original Post in no way whatsoever insinuated that he was there for the success. Not a single line he wrote implied that.

She sold 400k because of the promotion. She would still sell around 800k in the first week, and those were still great numbers. There's still people selling well in 2017, because they have a brand and loyal fans. While Gaga still has a good amount of fans, it feels like she is trying to go against her own brand because she despises the idea.

Correct, the amount that she would have sold without the promotion has been spoken about by her label and such several times since then. 800K is crazy high. I think she is just over it. This fanbase seemed to really want a dance/pop record, and she gave us Joanne. If anything (this is a joke), we need to start telling her to make the opposite of what we actually want. prince 4,688
I get what you're saying and obvs totally respect your opinion but a lot of the time I think part of the problem is the fans and not really Gaga. Obviously we all take in things differently and we process things differently but for some reason a lot of fans have accepted Gaga is a chameleon and she likes to change it up apart from with Joanne? I don't see Joanne as underwhelming nor do I think Gaga has lost her ambition or drive. I've come to terms that Gaga is now 31, BTW was released 6 years ago thus making Gaga 25 and it was also her third album. When BTW came out Gaga was still a new artist and still surrounded by questions intrigue and hype (also a very different team to now) and so everything was larger than life, she was a new pop star who was rapidly gaining so much fame and BTW was the perfect time to express a message, explore her wild side, she had room to move and play and when BTW came out a lot of people were turned off because it was an unusual change for a huge pop star. Gaga was changing so much and so fast she was a juggernaut. When her hip broke and her management left her, her team still tried to squeeze out the excitement for ARTPOP and still pushed that era to it's max. I think during that time Gaga craved something smaller and simpler. This smaller and simpler part is where fans seem to start dropping or questioning Gaga's passion. I think the fact that Gaga chose to do jazz and then chose to do Joanne shows her drive and passion off even more? An artists drive showcases through their work and Gaga put again more personal themes into her album (you can't say this album had no message because of a few odd songs, that applies to every album in that case). The fact that Gaga chose to use proper instruments again, showcase her voice and writing abilities shows insane amounts of drive. The promotion schedule is a different story especially when you take into consideration how much Gaga didn't like it and also how much her albums were promoted back then because she was relatively new. Gaga has been in the public sphere for almost ten years, every one of her albums will have hype promotion or no promotion purely because of her name. A promotion schedule doesn't show off someones drive to create; Gaga is getting older and more mature, she's past conquering the world and being the biggest pop star ever and whatever happened in her career that was going to happen one day. You can't say there's no drive when she's accomplishing everything she set out to do, be successful in music and be an actress. Just because she doesn't wear crazy outfits 24/7 and she's not always in a radio or television studio promoting something doesn't mean she's got no drive. This era is stripped back and yet she's still killing it and showcasing how Gaga she can be. We all need to accept that 6 years ago the industry was SO different, Gaga was young, her team were different, she was new! You're now looking at a mature artist who wants to focus on every single bit of their career whatsoever, success or no success! Tbh this could be the most valuable time to be a fan

You don't speak for the fanbase. The fanbase is all over the place...from wanting rock to disco to R&B to ballads. Gaga can't please everyone and that should never be her goal anyhow as an artist. Yeah, I never really understood why people conveniently disregard that. People don't buy music anymore. They either download it for free, or stream it (I stream it). I think pointing out her tour sales versus her album sales is a good indication of that. I simply stream the album, never bought it (I don't use iTunes nor buy physical albums) but I purchased three tickets to the tour.

The first line of your post seems very cold, and I am not sure why. No, I do not represent the entire fanbase. It's a FACT though, that before Joanne dropped, the vast majority of this website was talking about how excited they were for a new pop/dance album. Now that, is a solid fact. But to the last two sentences of your post, I agree. People want different things, and Gaga should simply make the music she wants instead of catering to people.
