NAACP warns POC of traveling to Missouri

The advisory was issued after Senate Bill 43-- which makes it more difficult for employees to prove their protected class, like race or gender, directly led to unlawful discrimination -- passed through the Missouri Legislature in June. Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens signed it into law soon after.

What is extra about pointing out the passing of racist laws so that people can be wary of where they move or end up living or passing through  Some states allow legal discrimination (which is ****ed up, no denying it), and some people that would be discriminated against accordingly don't want to end up there.

I believe these are the kinds of things that fuel people's racism even further, though. This is so counterproductive. As much as I do not believe in the majority of what conservatives believe in, liberals and the left go way too far many times, it's so off putting.

They are not doing that, this is in response to legislation passed that they feel legalises discrimination against POC. They also point out that African Americans in Missouri are 75% more likely to be stopped and searched when driving. The NAACP has also been wary of a rise in violence and threats against POC including:

- Public threats of shooting ‘Blacks’ that terrorized University of Missouri students and members of the public.

-Black high school students in St. Louis have been attacked with hot glue while denigrated racially

- Two internationally born men gunned down outside in Kansas City after their killer thought them to be Muslim

- Tory Sanford who recently died in a jail cell but was never arrested after running out of gas when he traveled into the state accidently

Among other incidents.

Whether you agree with the NAACP or not, they are not claiming that all, or even most, Missourians are racist. They are arguing that the state government has passed laws that strip away protections for POC and make it almost impossible for POC to seek recourse and/or compensation if they have been discriminated against.

The Conference President Rod Chapel Jr even said "This does not follow the morals of Missouri, I hate to see Missouri get dragged down deep past the notion of treating people with dignity." so it would be disingenuous to claim the NAACP is painting the people of the state with one broad brush.

Because it is not needed. It doesn't take a genius to realize a state like Missouri probably isn't a running a fan club for people of color. This isn't a news flash, the South is still pretty racist. If someone needed a spokesperson to tell you this, then I have to really question their intelligence.

They deemed it necessary for the reasons I and @Bebe have stated. Yes, the south is racist (so is the North  ) but it doesnt mean black people should expect the government to not have their backs, since ya know they should be above that. It's a warning for legitimate reasons, idk what else there is to say.

Maybe I just have a different way of thinking than you guys, but this seems like fighting fire with fire and with these actions, I feel the NAACP no longer has a stone to throw. And if anything, as another member pointed out, things like this fuel racism. We'll have to agree to disagree.

If all it takes is a statement like this to inspire racism in someone, they were on shaky ground to begin with.

I said it fuel's their racism even further, adding gas to the fire etc. It does nothing to combat racism, just creates more of a divide.

Pointing out that some things are racist is an observation. How is that fighting fire with fire? Again, this isn't "People of Color, avoid Missouri because the white people there are racist"  If you believe that this simple act fuels racism somehow and lessens the credibility of the NAACP then yes, we'll have to agree to disagree, but we've both pointed out entirely legitimate reasons for this travel warning and you've said nothing against those points, so they will stand.

I just don't see how this is fighting fire with fire at all.

The state government is passing laws that make discrimination against POC easier and stripping away legal protections for POC. They are failing to act on data showing that the police force in the state are actively targeting POC that has lead to increased traffic fines, senseless searches of vehicle and persons, and on occasion unnecessary violence. They are not acting on cases where POC have died in a jail cell despite not actually committing any crime. 

Wider issues in the state include violence against POC and terroristic threats made against POC in public schools and universities.


The NAACP is saying "Hey, be cautious when travelling to the state". I just don't see how it's close to an equivalent or extremist at all. They just laid out their specific issues with the state government and cautioned people travelling to the state about how the laws passed could effect them.
