Gaga Monster 13,001
Mattis, who was on vacation at the time of Trump's decision, only had one day's worth of notice before Trump tweeted his announcement of the policy, the paper reported. The report described him as "appalled." Sources close to the Defense secretary told the Times that Mattis was infuriated by the tweets, and saw them as an insult to transgender Americans currently serving in the military. http://thehill.com/policy/defense/344290-mattis-appalled-by-trump-tweets-announcing-transgender-military-ban-report GGD Presidential Elections
Gaga Monster 13,001
I love General Mattis, he is the only one in Trumps cabinet I really like! Only 4 Democrats didn't vote to confirm him, every other Democrat did! GGD Presidential Elections

HOTNebraskaGuy 19,547
I’ve only heard good things about this guy. His role is probably the best thing to come out of Trump’s presidency. One, five, ten lay a million on me
EGOT2027 10,966
He's probably more mad about the lack of coordination. You can't just announce something huge like this without alerting all the departments ahead of time and figuring out how it will be implemented. Buddy 5,686
I don't think trans people should be in the military if they're currently transitioning because transition is such a tedious mentally-demanding process. You aren't even allowed to take antidepressants in the military, and can only join if you haven't taken them for 365 days. Hormones have even more side effects than anti-depressants, especially testosterone. My gay friend who was in the military for 5 years was actually the one who convinced me this. I asked him why it was ok for trans people to not be able to serve in any capacity? Like not even off-combat jobs? He said there's no such thing, that when you're in the military you have to be ready to go to combat at all times. I do think, though, if you're completely done transitioning and pass all the mental and physical evaluations, you should absolutely 100% able to serve. That's a completely different thing from banning an entire group of people though. The discussion is about the ban, not whether or not people are combat ready. You don't ban all male soliders because some have erectile dysfunction. Anyone going through a serious medical operation and/or is dealing with complications of depression, ptsd, etc should already by given immunity from combat. That's common sense. Also, just because someone is transitioning or is Trans doesn't mean they are mentally and physically unfit for work. Your friend is wrong. People can serve if they are ready and able. Lion Heart 15,041
Thousands of service members could be affected by Trump's new policy. A 2016 study found that anywhere from 2,000 to 11,000 active-duty service members identify as transgender. The study noted that not all of these service members will seek transition surgery or hormone therapy while part of the military. So in other words, of the few brave transgender soldiers already serving, only a couple of them actually need hormones etc. And I'm glad Gen Mattis isn't just rolling with whatever Trump demands. I also read a report saying that Sec. of State Rex Tillerson is thinking about leaving. What a fined-tuned machine. ▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀

Someone at the top had to force him or encourage him to hire him. There is no way you just randomly choose the former CEO of Exon Mobil as your secretary of state. Margaux 137
You guys do realize trains people continue to take hormones post operation right? as a trans woman myself it's incredibly frustrating to see people post something make present a statement as if it's a universal fact when it's clearly something you heard from someone who isn't even transgender or isnt certified in endocrinology. Making the assumption that someone who takes hormones has "severe mental illness" is really ignorant. Especially when when you have to go to therapy to get a letter from your doctor to even say that you are mentally stable enough to start hormone replacement therapy. Could there be some restrictions set regarding the amount of time someone has been taking them (let's say a few months) for them to properly serve? Sure. But ALL of the individuals serving our country seem to be doing a good job thus far. Taking her has not affected my ability to commit to something and have a job if anything it's made me even more committed and ambitious. I really think some people in the lgbt or whatever community need to realize that trans people aren't just goofy caricatures of what's painted by society but literally people with goals and ambitions. I'm not saying that you should go out and learn what it's like to transition I could care less. All I'm saying is if you don't know something and don't care to learn about it without having a bias based on stereotypes or sensationalized views just don't say anything tbh.
