How do you edit vocals? Do you use compression+ equalizer? Any other effects? How do you record the backing vocals?

Haven't I answered this question before? :-/ I think I have:

First of all - don't record a song in one go. Record four-five takes of each part separately (1st verse, chorus, etc), pick the best ones (or combine the best parts of each take). The basic treatment for the chorus is to have three different takes of the lead vocal: one in the center channel, and two other ones turned down (pretty low in the mix, just to give the main vox some additional depth) and panned 100% (or 90%) left and right. Also you can record some harmonies... again - two different takes panned hard left & right. You'll have to make sure that the timing of everything is good beforehand and, if not, tweak the parts that are off.

I don't use heavy compression, but I do compress the vocals slightly and then adjust the volume of the parts that still remain too low manually.

When I EQ my vocals, I bring up the high end and bring down the the low frequencies (because those are inaudible and just take up space in the mix). Makes everything sound clearer.

Can't really suggest anything effects-wise besides "delay" (it's very useful to blend the vocals with the instrumental) because different things work with different types of vocals, you'll just have to try things and see if they work.

P.S. Googling "processing vocals" or "mixing vocals" would be helpful too, it's not some secret knowledge and there are tons of videos on youtube that explain the basics of mixing. :kitty:

you did :) sorry, but thanks anyways! You're amazing!

edit: on the verses, do you also have three takes with two of them panned to the sides?

ok, bounardy isn't you--is it? because the voices from TF and boundaries sound nothing like

but i love them both

and why not "the factory" as your name? :P

EDIT: just saw what you said about boundaries. it's really nice :)

can you make a cover for it? :)

and i still think "the factory" is a great alias for you. i think it truly embodies your sound. and it's ****ing legit :P

I don't like The Factory as an alias, it sounds awkward to me...

Of course Boundary is not sung me, I only wrote and produced the song, and I also sang a very small part near the end. I think it's pretty easy to tell that the rest is sung by a girl. :fat:

I'm working on two songs right now, and neither of them has anything to do with the ones that you've mentioned. I'll get to those songs too, eventually, cause they are my favorites. I just want to make sure that the lyrics and the vocal parts sound right beforehand.

Ha-ha, that's cool. I think I'll go with "Ashes". I had an idea to leave out the "E", so it looks like "Ash S", and when you actually say it is still sounds like "Ashes" if this makes any sense. What do you think? I think the idea behind the latter is quite cool, but "Ashes" looks way neater. :)

aw well I suppose your name is your choice xP i think TF is cooler, but 'Ashes' is interesting..

and i didn't mean to offend you or anything...you don't sound like a girl...i didn't think boundary was you, lol

what's the inspiration behind The Factory?

and as for the new stuff, what are the sounds like? similar to TF? i hope you have a darker, heavier, harder, louder, more intense song at one point--that'd be awesome :D

No, that would be overkill. For the verses one straight vocal (and maybe subtle harmonies for a few phrases) is the best solution imo.

The track that I'm working on atm is a bit faster and heavier than The Factory, but I wouldn't call it dark. It's similar in a sense that it's also electropop. I have some really dark and heavy electronic stuff, but I'm saving it for later.

awesome:) the factory is so catchy. I really really love it. it's the electropop stuff but it's certainly inventive...not really generic at all.

when do you think the next son will be ready? very excited :S

Oh wow, I like that! Both Ashes and Ash S sound spectacular, but it's all up to you! If you're still looking for a different alias, just look up some synonyms for those terms. :hehe:

Flame, Fire, Demise, Burned, Burnt, etc. etc. etc. :spin:

Anyway, I can't wait to hear your new work! Hopefully once you become famous, all the active members apart of this thread can keep these mp3 audio files and tease fans who are so desperate to hear them. Just like with Gaga and Musicland etc.
