Dutch 91,353
2015 and 2016. I'm not saying it was all bad music, but I think the music industry went too much male after 2014. Also Spotify got too much influence around 2015 and 2016, this also ruined the music industry imo.
StrawberryBlond 14,864
Well, I listen to a lot of music, even by artists I don't like, through being an amateur critic. I try to listen to anyone that I've heard of. They have to have a certain level of relevancy, though because I only have so much time to dedicate to listening to new music every week, especially because there can sometimes be as many as 3 albums to review a week. I stopped listening to people that I hadn't heard of quite a while ago. But I'm still listening to enough to make me realise that it doesn't really matter whether someone is mainstream or indie, music really is in the doldroms right now. It's been getting worse every year. I've never found much solace in indie artists. I'm always being told that mainstream music sucks and it's the underground ones who are showing how it's done. And I listen to them and I'm all: "I think I can understand why no one buys their music now..." Just because you're indie doesn't automatically make you experimental or good. No wonder so many indie artists have high opinions of themselves. They've twisted things so that not succeeding makes them better than those who are, in their mind at least. Thing is, even listening to older albums, I've realised it's always been like this. Knocking the ball out the park with the singles and not trying on the rest of the album, tricking you into buying it on the strength of the singles. They've been doing it since music started being put on sale. They've been taking us for a ride for decades. Thank God for streaming and other ways to listen to a whole album for free before you buy it to see if it's worth it. Most of them are average at best and average isn't good enough. There's very few artists out there who genuinely bust their ass to make a great album where every track is amazing, where you don't want to skip anything. That's why Gaga and Lana are the only 2 artists who I actually buy music from anymore. They're the only ones who genuinely seem to give a damn on not just one album but every album, that try to make their albums the best quality listening experience, even if they're not selling millions. But money corrupts so many other artists. They get one massive era and then start believing their own hype and think they don't have to try anymore. And here's a misconception I'd like to clear up - women can be sexist too. We are encouraged by society to think male artists are the best, that they don't use sex to sell, that they write their own stuff, play their own instruments and are 'real.' The same respect is not encouraged for females. And women fall for this marketing too. I've said a few times that if you want an example of how men and women are different, look at what will encourage them to buy music. A man would never buy a woman's music just because she's hot. But a lot of women will happily buy a male artist's entire discography, tour tickets and merchandise just because she thinks he's hot. And a lot of them don't even realise that they're doing it. That they're not even supporting their own gender, that they're encouraged to believe that male artists are the only ones worth spending money on. There's a reason why girl bands who can sing are normally the first ones kicked off reality singing shows but boybands who can't sing get through every week. There's a reason why women are encouraged to have a Mariah-level voice but a man who can't sing can get away with it. There's a reason why a man can have an record-breaking album in his debut week on the strength of one single but a woman will have to have several successful singles and get those sales gradually over time. There's a reason why critics criticise a woman for experimenting with her music yet will praise a man who experiments as some sort of genius innovator. And all these things have the same reason: sexism.

Whistle Well if you look at just the #1s, 2016 was trash, when in reality was a really fantastic year for music.
Laceface 2,964
I think you are all right, the main stream music has been terrible in general for many years. Each year has it's own hidden gems though, with rising artists and their debut albums especially.

Phlop 4,773
For some reason I was extremely bored with 2012. It was a weird year, like I enjoyed the new artists that came that year but I wasn't invested musically. I felt 2016 felt bad too, idk. Besides our fav nothing was sticking with me.
