Harry 26,836
A song can be completely different from what's popular and still be boring. There's all different ways of being boring. Â No, my definition of bland fits with the dictionary definition - boring, mundane, unremarkable. Of course, applying that tag to music is going to be subjective, but then, judging music is always subjective. In the case of Mirrors, I feel it's a song that meanders on with no purpose, it doesn't build up to anything, the lyrics are textbook and it's like Justin made a bet that he could get the song over the 8 minute mark because his new work seems to be unnecessarily long for the sheer hell of it. And I wish people would stop using retorts like "So says the person with a Lana signature." I find Lana's lyrics and musical compositions to be absolutely sublime and head and shoulders above everything else right now. If people don't agree with me, that's their opinion, but clearly if I'm talking about bland music while I'm a Lana fan, it means that my view of bland differs from yours. It feels like having a Lana signature around here is akin to having a Kick me sticker on your back. Â Of course I'll slate stuff I dislike - music is there to be judged. But of course music's subjective and I never said my word was gospel. But it would be silly to put a disclaimer above everything I say with the words "This is just my opinion." I figure that should always be a given. I like reviewing music and unfortunately, a lot of the music around right now is not doing for me, so I'll be rather disgruntled. Is it really wrong of me to express that? As regards Justin, I'm disappointed that an artist so talented has lowered themselves to such soul-less, cliche music. Â I'm a huge fan of Lana so don't even go there it was simply an example because I know you are a fan. I could've said Gaga or anyone. But as per your over dramatic defense about her maybe you can understand where I'm coming from when I defend claims that Mirrors is soul-less and cliche because I have seen the exact same claims about Lana on this site and others, that she is just a manufactured product that follows a blueprint - whatever. ANYTHING can be made out to be stereotypical, cliche and try hard if you make it out to be. Doesn't mean it is. Â But when hasn't Justin had long songs? On FS/LS there are only 3 songs that are less than 5 minutes. I can get why people don't like longer songs but it isn't like that's something new for him. Â The point is you just seem to get really bitter and 'pressed' over artists you don't like that are successful and completely lay into them but if someone goes after Lana you think it's completely unfair? I just don't think it's worth your time getting so wound up, that's all.

Harry 26,836
I'm surprised Bruno hasn't overtaken Justin by now. I expect it will happen within the next couple of days at least. The Brits version of Mirrors is trailing off but it still gives him a +10% lead. Â Does anyone think 1D is still with a chance of getting back to #1 after Comic Relief? StrawberryBlond 14,267
I'm a huge fan of Lana so don't even go there it was simply an example because I know you are a fan. I just don't think it's worth your time getting so wound up, that's all. I think most of the criticisms of Lana mostly come from people misinterpreting her work and not understanding that it's satire and concept art. Plenty of male artists take on characters and make a concept album around it and they don't get hate for some reason. It's easy to have a negative opinion of something that you don't understand. I like to think I research music very well, though, so i can give the best possible view of it. I won't say something's soul-less or cliche just because I don't like it - it's a conclusion I'll have reached after a--lysing the lyrics. Yes, anything can be made out to be stereotypical, cliche and try hard if you want it to be, but I'm not doing that. I'm just genuinely baffled for the success of this basic song. Â At least when Justin made long songs in the past, they were interesting and went somewhere. Mirrors drags on for at least three minutes longer than it needs to be. There reaches a point in a song when you know there's nothing left to say, but for some reason, Justin squeezed every last drop out of a sog that didn't have much going for it to start with. I kept expecting him to drop a new verse or for an instrumental or something, but no. Just the same from beginning to end. And for the record, Suit & Tie is boring and overly repetative too. Why he thought that was a good choice for a lead single, I'll never know. So far, nothing about his new music is screaming "big time comeback." If rumours are to be believed, he's just doing this album to fufill contractual obligations and it shows, because I'm not feeling anything from his new work. Â Everyone has the right to express their dislike for artists and I don't hesitate to exercise it. When pointless drivel floods the airwaves, you're allowed to let out your frustration, right? I don't mind people hating on Lana so much as hating on her fans. We seem to be fair game for anyone to take a shot at. Once, I was even accused of not listening to a lot of music because I liked her work.(which really infuriated me as I'd listened to 102 albums released in 2012). It's a lot of people's ignorance about the intentions in her music that bug me too. I don't get as wound up as you think. Things can sound more dramatic in text form. Gosh well see I'm just going to leave it with this because I think it's a matter of semantics and I'm just exercising my right to an opinion just as you are but statements such as the one I've bolded seem to imply you think your taste or "conclusions" hold higher value than anybody else. What about critics who are very experienced and knowledgeable in music, and people such as myself who study music (forgive me if I'm sounding condescending and talking out of place and you do as well) and say Mirrors and Suit & Tie are actually pretty daring and interesting for pop music? Especially S&T... And I won't bore you with a theory lesson about it. Â You don't really have a place to say whether he's in it for contractual obligations or not just because you aren't a fan of the music... that's highly absurd. When he's performing on stage he is visibly enjoying it, even when he's jet lagged and playing an awards show immediately followed by a full concert. That's just silly. Â You don't need to be baffled by the success of anything... Why would you be? For someone that a--lyses the charts as much as you I don't think you are actually surprised at the success of ANYTHING by now. Sometimes things we like do well, and sometimes things we don't like do well. Music is so brilliant because our tastes are diverse. There isn't anything baffling about that. And it's why this conversation doesn't need to exist anymore - you have your opinion, and I have mine.

And it's why this conversation doesn't need to exist anymore - you have your opinion, and I have mine. My taste and/or conclusions don't hold a higher value to everyone else's, I'm merely saying that I don't just hate a song superficially - I make sure I've understood it so I don't look like a fool if I've got the wrong end of the stick and make sure that I can actually list reasons why I hate it. Basically, I'm saying that I don't hate songs just to be awkward or make up my mind about them after one listen. I'm kinda wary of the opinions of professional critics, as you're never sure if they're being paid to write good reviews these days (that's usually the justifications I give as to why Nicki Minaj's and Taylor Swift's albums get such glowing reviews) and some of them get into a habit of consistently giving passable grades to almost every album. If you think these songs are good, that's fine, but I'm genuinely intrigued as to why (you can put your explanation in spoilers: I don't mind). Â I'm not saying it because I'm not a fan (actually, I think his music's very good on the whole) - this is genuine information that he had to fufill his contract by 2013 and he isn't really interested in making any more music after this. All I can say is, don't expect a follow up album in the next two years or anything. Â True - sometimes I'm baffled by the success of songs in a good way. For one, I was thrilled to see the amazing My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark go to #5 in the UK. It's the antithesis of everything that's popular right now and it's by a long-forgotten emo band who have never had successful mainstream singles. It baffles me, but in a delightful way. I've long given up trying to make cast iron predictions on the public's tastes anyway. But yeah, your opinion is just as meaningful as mine and differing opinions make the world go round.
