Black Lives Matter, Four Years Later

Four years ago Thursday, the Black Lives Matter movement came into existence, shifting both how many Americans perceive social justice and the lexicon used to describe racial injustices. 

"Four years ago, what is now known as the Black Lives Matter Global Network began to organize," the organization wrote on its website. "It started out as a Black-centered political will and movement building project turned chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene when violence is inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. In the years since, we’ve committed to struggling together and to imagining and creating a world free of anti-Blackness, where every Black person has the social, economic, and political power to thrive."

The movement began after George Zimmerman, the man who killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, was acquitted in Florida. Since then, there have been countless killings of black Americans that the movement has addressed and put a spotlight on. In the wake of the deaths of Eric Garner in New York City, Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Walter Scott in South Carolina, Freddie Gray in Baltimore and many others, "Black Lives Matter" became a rallying cry and hashtag in the wake of police-involved deaths of African-Americans.

has the group done good for racial tensions in the US or worsened them?

i agree, it made the attention for police brutality and caused many police departments to adopt bodycams. but it also opened the door for unnecessary riots in cities like Ferguson. it also led to a misunderstanding of police. overall, i think it was a turning point in race talk since the 1990's.

It's done good at bringing some issues into the mainstream.

But for certain blind whites and other non-blacks who don't think these issues are real it's "worsened" relations because they refuse to ever talk about them and live in a bubble. Especially the #AllLivesMatter folks who don't seem to understand what BLM even is.

As for effectiveness, some of the people in the group are extremists and sound ridiculous but the fundamental belief that BLACK LIVES MATTER is very important and progress should continue to be made possible.

I think the message of the group is really important, and I think the majority of its supporters have the right intentions, but its sad that a few extremists in the group make the whole organization a scapegoat for people to dismiss police brutality

I feel like while Black Lives Matter brought some issues into the limelight, a lot of it won't change much is misguiding. This is a really good video for showing the issues of black people and why Black Lives Matter isn't necessarily focusing on the right issues:

At its core, I agree with they're doing. Yes, sometimes some people can do over the line and bring drama where there is none needed, but the majority of the movement wants equality and respect for the community, like any other minority group.

I strongly believe in the fight and they helped to put the problems on the table which is wonderful and actually made a few changes and made many people aware..

but some of them are very radical and it's sometimes pushing me away because I feel like they hate me or something..

I feel like it's been more Straight Black Male Lives Matter, but they've def got America shook and have made progress. Although there are the extremists/hypocrites I def support the cause, and hope their message reverberates where it most needs to.
