Racist Airbnb host fined and must take a class

An Airbnb host who canceled a woman’s reservation because of her race has agreed to pay $5,000 in damages and take a course in Asian American studies, a state regulatory agency announced Thursday.

The host, Tami Barker, told the woman who reserved her Big Bear cabin for a ski vacation in February that she would not rent to an Asian, justifying the action by adding in a text message, “It’s why we have Trump,” referring to President Trump.

The woman, Dyne Suh, a UCLA law student, said she was driving in a snowstorm to the Big Bear cabin when she received the text messages via the Airbnb mobile app. A tearful Suh, standing in the snow, shot a video posted on YouTube, describing her exchange with Barker.

“I’ve been here since I was 3 years old,” she said in the video. “America is my home. I consider myself an American. But this woman discriminates against me because I’m Asian.”

In the video, Suh shows screen shots of the exchange, including a message from Barker saying, “It’s is why we have Trump” and, “I will not allow this country to be told what to do by foreigners.”

So many ugly stories with ABNB, yet people still thinks it's better than proper hotels

I do know many hosts in that app are racists, and the fact that ABNB require the guest to explain who they are and what they will do before a host decide to take their offer or not, is only helping these people out to filter all the races or ethnic and gender groups they don't want to rent their house to.

With hotels, you just book a room, and check in and nobody cares what you are doing in that country so long you pay for the room.

The one who pushed the woman wasn't racist. The problem was about someone checking out 90 minutes later than they had to. Even though both actions weren't right, it's not racism. So no, it's not the same guy. Just pointing that out though.

I've used airbnb serveral times and I never had the need to explain who I was or what I was going to do.

Well, if they are unpleasant I'll choose another option

Usually, I go for airbnb because it is cheaper than using an hotel, I also like the fact of staying in a local home at wherever I'm staying, feels like I'm living in the cities' culture. But then again, I never tried a hotel before

Well, each of us have personal reference. For me, I just want a hassle free holiday from the start. And all that process for looking up houses, then going through screening, and possibility for being rejected because whatever reasons the hosts might have are too much for me.

There are some houses where you are accepted immediately  But yes, I see your point of view
