What was the point of releasing G.U.Y. as a single?

After DWUW video failed to release the ARTPOP era was pretty much dead. It was about time to start touring.  I still don't see why they picked G.U.Y. as the final single for ARTPOP.  I think it's a great song but not nearly catchy enough or strong enough to be a hit.  Donatella (one of the best songs on ARTPOP) and Sexxx Dreams would have been better singles instead of G.U.Y.  The video was her absolute best since Alejandro.  I don't get why she spent so much money on a fantastic music video for that song though.  That big of a video should have been used for Venus.  Was there a reasoning why they ended the era with G.U.Y.? Apart from the David Letterman performance there wasn't any television promo.  I never heard it on the radio.  Did they predict it was going to be her biggest flop ever?  Even The Cure charted higher and that song had zero promo!

@dannydevito paid me to quote this

OT: The era had already flopped by then so it didn't matter. She could've released a 30 second clip of herself burping and no one would've noticed.

G.U.Y. has Greek undertones they wanted to shoot at Hearst Castle  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe her label wanted to at least wanted on more single at the request of G.U.Y. who knows

Mmmmm you lost me at "Donatella (one of the best songs on ARTPOP)

But yes, Sexxx Dreams deserved to be a single way more than G.U.Y.

I don't get these sort of comments. Like, I remember vividly how in 2013 a lot of you thought G.U.Y. was everything :unicorn:

THIS!!!
I was rooting for Sexxx Dreams but all I kept seeing was "OMG G.U.Y WILL SLAY THE CHARTS".
Then when she released it...well...we all know what happened

Still think it was a poor single choice

Didn't Gaga pay for the video though?

Most fans here were like "Omg GUY is a hit waiting to happen, I can't believe she's ignoring ARTPOP!" but then it was released and with an amazing music video. The point of it was to continue promoting ARTPOP after the drama with her management. The song was released but people were just not interested in Gaga at that time I guess.

Had she not released it fans would still be like "Omg not releasing GUY was her biggest mistake, it had so much potential to be one of her biggest hits!" And it's something you see with Dancin' In Circles as well and something that happened to Marry The Night.
