Curunir 7,510
I see your point, but I disagree. Every Gaga album has a couple of powerful songs that transcend the ordinary "pop" song. Some have fewer (The Fame, ARTPOP), some have more (TFM, BTW, Joanne). But by creating albums with a mixture of more "types" of songs (e.g. fun vs serious, or often a combination of both) I feel like she has achieved the perfect balance, especially with her more recent albums. And also there's the fact that I've been searching for years and yet I still can't find an artist whose songs make me feel the way Gaga's do (but that's just a subjective aspect)

Miel 15,009
I see where OP is coming from, and to an extent I agree. That said, the way she kind of composes a pop song, and makes it amazing while still holding a catchy simplicity, is really something else (mostly apparent in TF/M, as it definitely started to get a little weirder and more complex starting with BTW). We all know she has the compositional and lyrical capabilities to make a truly great balladic masterpiece, and it occasionally shows. 3 points in and ready for more
giskardsb 12,565
Speechless IMO is the one song for sure that could hold up against the quality of songwriters like Carole King. Bad Romance is also very good albeit a bit quirky and dark, but there is a reason everyone covered it. ARTPOP (the song) is one of my personal favorites... although it doesn't have the easy theme for most people to appreciate easily, it has some really good concepts embedded in it's lyrics and some great lines. Joanne songwriting in general is much better in pure "songwriting" terms and is certainly shows growth. The biggest problem is that current pop audiences and pop radio really don't care about good songwriting. It's sad to think that some of the great artists of the past including some of those that Gaga has covered, Sting, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, others such as Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, etc, all wonderful song writers, would not be played on current popular radio. crackpoppodcast 1,531
I think the best is yet to come. Maybe this is all part of her master plan :). I mean she's just recently proven to the GP that she has amazing vocal talent so she's probably going to ride that out next. She needed to break into the industry and shallow (mostly) pop music allowed her to do this. And now she can evolve even further.
giskardsb 12,565
and actually ASIB will be a great forum for some really good songwriting. Movie audiences will expect some powerful songs that help propel the movie forward and with strong emotional content. It will also be outside the pop bubble and more acceptable to a wide demographic. I doubt we'll see Ally getting on stage and going "work work work work work work work.."

Oriane 21,060
I'm glad you made this thread because surprisingly, a lot of people seem to agree. If someone like me had done this, it would have gotten a lot more backlash. I agree, she can do way better but she sticks to her pop music right now, even though it's far better than what most of her contemporaries do, pop is still very conventional and she needs to expand her work. Why doesn't she do it ? Because she doesn't want to or because she's afraid to push the boundaries ? I think eventually she will do it, but when ?
