Will dance-pop return?

Performers nowadays are so toned down and the biggest albums are of the soul genre mainly emphatic on ballads and mid-tempo production. Hip-hop and R&B are also really huge but dance-pop is really dying.

Now let's take a look at the songs that were huge in 2011-2013:

Ok, you might have noticed that there are tons of female artists in the 2011-2013 part and tons of male artists charting today. No that wasn't a deliberate attempt making them distinctive from each other. I tried really hard to include male artists in the 2011-2013 part but I just can't think of any huge male artist in those days. Female pop stars were reigning so hard and I remember looking at the Grammy nominations thinking,

'Damn, did they really nominate 4 females and only 1 male in the Best Pop Solo Performance category?' Most categories reflect the same. Male artists were constantly overshadowed by artists like Gaga, Perry, Britney and Rihanna at award shows. Male artists almost never received any attention.

The only other male artist that was huge I can think of is Eminem but he's hip-hop, also Justin Bieber wasn't doing very well back then. The biggest hits of his I think were only Boyfriend and Beauty and the Beat. I included Pitbull because he was delivering hit after hit, from Give Me Everything to J-Lo tracks to Timber. One-hit wonders like Robin Thicke, Gotye, fun. were also pretty huge but I didn't include them because where are they now.

Fast forward to the present, go take a look at the Hot 100 chart and you will see that 80% of the songs charting are from male artists. Can you fcking believe that?

I just feel like we should appreciate artists who make uptempo dance-pop nowadays. It's odd because the only artist that is relatively huge I can think of is

Britney made Glory but it wasn't huge enough to be considered 'a return of dance-pop'. Then there are artists who are huge supporters of dance-pop like Jason Derulo and Nick Jonas who don't really reign either.

Witness scratched the pop itch for me. I was so involved with this era for Katy aswell. Unless another artist releases something this year under this genre I think Witness will be on top.

Exactly. It's not doing as well as Joanne or other huge albums but I do like the album because Katy is the only artist serving good dance-pop nowadays.

Miley and Gaga, even Nicki all toned down their musical styles. Though I do appreciate songs like John Wayne, Diamond Heart, the one that was really huge was Million Reasons

maybe in America but EDM based genres are still alive and well worldwide, in the UK the second biggest genre is still Deep House for example. America is big on R&B where as the UK only has a few major hits of it lately.

Dance-Pop was a poor man's version of Dance/House in 2011 so it can stay there (also btw most of the hits u posted from then are electro-pop not Dance-Pop, Zedd's hits on the radio were dance-pop for example not ET or BTW)

But in all honesty, I feel like dance based music will always be big thanks to the Four on The Floor stuff that occurred in the late 70s and is still big now.

All I personally want is true disco music to make a comeback

Thanks for the technicality clarification but I feel like a title 'Will electro-pop return?' sounds too weird for GGD.

Well the answer is Electro-Pop unlike Dance-Pop is still alive and well even on American charts.

Eventually, yes, but when people in clubs spend the night glued to their phones the outlook is bleak to say the least!

But there's allways a backlash to everything. I hear it's cooler to cruise in parks then on Grindr now. I hope that's true.

I think that dance-pop explosion was largely attributed to the idea that the generation of 88-93 started going to clubs in 2006-2011 and EDM dance pop was the sort of modern and technological solution to quench their thirst for something to dance to. In the past people used to dance to Led Zeppelin or some other rock artists, then to the disco etc. 

The 1996-2001 generation are the ones who are new on the club scene now, but the question is: do they go to the clubs at all? Aren't they more fond of bars or home parties? 

Also, in 2006-2011 clubs still were a sort of separate scene with the opportunity to discover some new artists (Gaga, LMFAO), while today clubs are very Internet-oriented and aim to play whatever popular on the streaming lists. The 2006-2011 dance pop revolution was completely different: it was about brining the club music to internet and to the radio waves, not vice versa
