But you can literally watch the series from your phone. If they went to a public library or watched it at a friends place, how is that the parents fault? I think it's easy to blame the parents tbh.

Ive dealt with loads of depression and anxiety and have had thoughts of ending my life (not any super serious thoughts btw) but if I were to end my life, my mom would NEVER be to blame for that. And I would be pissed if people blamed my moms parenting because she is not the reason for my depression.

They knew that their girls are struggling with mental illness, so they had to follow every step, they had to warn them about this tv show and let's not forget that the book was here longer than the show and they could do the same after reading it, so they would do them same in any case.

I think most of us dealt and still dealing with depression and anxiety and we had suicidal thoughts or even tried it a few times.. I survived it thanks to my parents because they were overprotecting me and giving me the best treatment..

So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy

I don't understand the comments that underestimate suicide emulation, tons of people committed suicide after just reading about Werther's and Ortis' suicides.

Teens watching Hannah slitting her wrists risk to suffer from Werther Effect as well, also because Hannah's suicide is more shocking than the ones depicted by Goethe and Foscolo.

Unfortunately, if it wasn't the show that was a 'trigger', they would have found another time to do so. It's not the shows fault. If someone is truly suicidal, yes try as much as you can to get them the help they need, but if someone is truly in that deep of a mindset, not seeing this show wouldn't have changed their minds and it would have just happened another time

This. If they were depressed to begin with, the problem was already there. Anything could have triggered it.

BUT some parents do get their kids the best treatment and are "overprotective" yet the child can still commit suicide.

i just think it's very shallow to pin point it solely on the parents.

Parenting isn't as easy as most of us think it is.

I was going through depression at the time I watched 13 Reasons Why, and nothing pushed my suicide feels except that scene where she slit her wrist..

I'm not going to argue about censorship again, because clearly we have different opinions and our opinions aren't going to change, but you will not accuse me of saying those children "deserved" to die. That's karma. Fate has nothing to do with "deserved" and you can argue with a dictionary all you want but you will not put words into my mouth because you have a poor understanding of the English language. That's completely inappropriate.

I wrote a lengthy reply trying to explain why this show is so toxic but instead you decided to attack my English skills and completely ignore everything I said LMAO go off girl you do you :madge:

Not only is it impossible to literally follow the "every move" of someone, as a parent that would also be extremely overbearing and would not help a young person with mental health issues whatsoever.

I haven't seen the show so can't comment on the content. But blaming the parents is really unfair. How would they "warn" their children about the show? They probably didn't even know what it was before they started watching it.

I personally think any person blaming either the show or the parents are being way too simplistic. There are so many variables with something like this.

13 Reasons Why does some things amazingly and some things pretty badly. I personally liked the show but it does glorify Hannah's final actions which I doubt does much for someone if they're in a heavy depressive episode and feeling suicidal. The constant beating down of Hannah, even when she reaches out for help, will not do much for someone who is already struggling to reach out.

Because I still stand by what I said and believe you to be incorrect, however you accused me of saying kids deserved to die. So I defended myself. Clearly my opinion is not changing and neither is yours so I felt no need to be a child and keep the argument going.

oh no a character committed suicide on this show I watched so I must kill myself as well :selena:

It fulfill suicidal people fantasies and glorify the idea of being 'missed' and the 'center of attention'.

How is a tv show that is suppose to bring light to the signs of suicidal thoughts in a child being blamed for causing suicide.

I don't understand how people are blaming the show. The show is very informative and shows you the downfalls of suicide.

no, it glorified suicide. the teens who had battled depression felt like they were alone. they were probably scared to do it, but after watching hannah commit in the show, they felt like they could too. they felt like everybody around them would feel remorse for the suffering they went through like clay did for hannah.

i'm assuming you don't/have never had depression before to make a remark like that.

I haven't watched simply because I lost my Dad coming up on 4 years from suicide and I couldn't bring myself to watch because I'd totally breakdown. I'm slowly starting to be able to talk about it more. It's not a taboo subject and needs to be talked about. I will get to watching it eventually but I don't know how you can blame a show. From everything I've heard about it it seems to really informative. Suicide is just ****ing confusing all around.
