'13 Reasons' blamed for teen suicides

The grieving families of two California teens who committed suicide in April just days after watching Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” said the show acted as a trigger for their daughters. Bella Herndon, who was three days shy of 16, and Priscilla Chui, who had battled depression and struggled in school, did not know each other, but had watched the show at around the same time and died four days apart.

“It’s very graphic, especially the two-minute scene where she slits her wrists in a bathtub,” Peter Chui, Priscilla’s uncle, told KTVU of the show. “I feel it’s dangerous for that small percentage of young adults who the show can become a trigger for them and I feel as if the show gives only one alternative for cyber bullying and other teenage issues.”

“Don’t go through with the renewal for the second season of ’13 Reasons Why,’” John Hurdon, the teen’s father, told KTVU. “Stop this. This is wrong. You’re making money off the misery of others.”

Netflix released a statement to KTVU expressing condolences for the teens, but said the series has opened up a dialogue for many others.

“Our hearts go out to these families during this difficult time,” the statement said. “We have heard from many viewers that 13 Reasons Why has opened up a dialogue among parents, teens, schools and mental health advocates around the difficult topics depicted in the show. We took extra precautions to alert viewers to the nature of the content and created a global website to help people find local mental health resources.”

13 Reasons Why may be the most important show of this generation, so I don't think it's to blame for their daughters suicide, and even if it is, it was important that it was made.

Unfortunately, if it wasn't the show that was a 'trigger', they would have found another time to do so. It's not the shows fault. If someone is truly suicidal, yes try as much as you can to get them the help they need, but if someone is truly in that deep of a mindset, not seeing this show wouldn't have changed their minds and it would have just happened another time

this fraudulent series should be cancelled, it's not raising awareness for mental illness or bullying it's only causing harm by using dangerous themes for profit and shock value

To be honest, I've been concerned that this show would be a negative trigger for some people with sucicidal ideations since it came out.  There's a huge difference between a show that openly discusses suicide, the ramifications of it, and why to get help, versus one that portrays a highly dramatized suicide and centers around it.  I personally hope Netflix removes it and instead uploads a more constructive show or set of documentaries, but I highly doubt they will, because the show has buzz and for them it's about the money.

I tried watching the first episode as I was going through depression, and I wouldn't recommend it if you're in that state of mind at all.

It's easy to blame a film when in fact the problem should be handled in home. The parents should have taken more care of their daughters and should have talked to them about it. Depression is a difficult issue, so it's important to be aware about what people who suffer it do and the content they're exposed to.

Slit her wrists? Hell it looked more like she was trying to saw her arms off. They went overboard on that scene for real. It could've been done much more subtly but just as effectively.

As others have stated, if someone really wants to end their life, they're gonna find a way and a reason regardless of what's on tv. And I wish people would stop acting like this is the first show in history to depict suicide. It's not even that good.
