Ok, you can have your  braids and twerk and hip-hop, but at the same time you have to give up white culture. Daily reminder that everything from movies, basketball (invented by whites) and toilet paper can be considered a cultural appropriation if that's the case. Black people should be grateful that their ancestors weren't shipped back and brought to a civilized society in the first place.

Did you really just say that?

Wow, I am really sorry, and honestly hope you are trolling.

I am so sorry that your mind is clouded by hate and ignorance like this.

Take care :ohno:

There is truth in cultural appropriation but I believe it's been taken too far on some things. Not everything is cultural appropriation and some things can no longer be claimed by one culture.

Guess I missed the part of how immigrants are mocked. In where I live the majority of population is local, I don't really have a chance to see it that way. Thanks for giving me a whole new perspective.

I'd say I can still incorporate other cultures in my life as long as I do it with respect?

Of course, as long as it is done with respect and the intention to honor those who brought their culture, it's good. I personally think it should be done thoughtful.

HERE'S THE GODDMAN THING: Appropriation leads to miseducation:

For examples, most geishas are HIGHLY trained entertainers and it takes YEARS of studying and practice to do what they do. But when you think of geishas in the west, what do you see? Japanese prostitutes. WHy? Because of people like this:

katy-perry.jpg?w=700

This way of dressing is NOT only offensive to the people (as an asian american myself) but is also another way of seeing white hollywood taking our culture and SELLING IT OFF AS A PRODUCT.

It's just a dress, you are overreacting

I understand- it's just the impression people get off of that dress is what makes me angry. Because the dress represents a culture, and she just used it as a fashion statement.

It's the issue of them using it as a costume. In real life, this takes away the serious aspect of our cultures, and people can not take us seriously for what we do because they can only see it as an aspect of a music video.

I understand why you believe it's a reach, but if you haven't been bullied due to these "usage of aspects" in mass media (if you have, please correct me), please don't try to expand on the influence of whitewashing.

people always use historical figures as costumes and in an exaggerated way. this is normal in pop culture from music videos to movies. nobody really stops taking people of color seriously because of their ancient history. they are not taken seriously because of the current depictions of them in media and the not so distant time when discrimination was the norm.

and i'm latino so **** yeah i see people use pieces of my ancestors culture in odd ways that do not truly represent the true nature of the cultural garb or idol. i dont get up in arms or offended by it because this cultural diffusion is naturally going to happen. fighting cultural appropriation isnt something i think people should be putting much time towards. it really makes our movement equality look like nitpicky children who are easily discredited. when hollywood blatantly white washes a movie like they did with stonewall (a movie that actually had deep meaning to it)then yeah you should boycott and such but you need to pick your battles so people who really fight for equality and deal with more pressing issues dont get bunched into the box of "snowflake" "SJWs". going after pop stars in music videos and on the red carpet.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

Yes, I really mean that. In Russian they would be sent to camps in Siberia (that's exactly how they treated other minorities), in Britain they would starve them to death. It's actually very humane how white Americans treated black slaves (not to say that thousands of them died giving them freedom). It's hilarious how a single black person in American has the audacity to blame white people on their problems. Just look at African countries and have some reality check. You were brought to the first world country and given freedom. What else do you want? Blacks hardly contributed anything to American society despite lower educational standards, crime and division. And this is how foreigners see you (I am from Serbia), not sure what Americans who are brainwashed by liberal media would think about that.

I feel sooo sorry for you.

I hope you get help. Love you and take care.:(

I know but troll or not, they deserve compassion.

It is so sad that someone finds some sort of perverse pleasure in this.

I truly hope they can find help and happiness.

It's a very complex issue. In general the consensus is that people in the "homeland" are not nearly as offended as Asian-American (for example) people would be, because Asian-Americans or any other diaspora in another country have to actually deal with the consequences, disadvantages and stereotypes that come from all of this in their daily life.

Put shouldn't we rather fight for the privilege that people can wear their clothes and not dragging white people all the time. smh:

i could launch into a detailed, lengthy history as to why it absolutely is cultural appropriated to wear protective hairstyles that africans created near the beginning of humans.

but what i don't get is how people are blind to cultural appropriation being a real thing. you've seen it happen. if you want to use katy as an example lets not forget her and the whole egyptian thing. egyptians are and were black. old hollywood white washed it. and she and her team went right along with the messed up white version.

and as others have pointed out people from their own cultures get belittled and even murdered for being outwardly proud of their cultures. but white people use those cultures and get printed in magazines, have music videos made of the exploitation, build a brand and in turn an empire off of it, etc. and then profit off of it. its not that hard to understand.

Egyptians are not black. They are Arab.

i understand and totally agree with your last argument (i chose the katy thing cause the pic is on the first thread) and there are bigger problems to panic over but honestly cause i'm asian-american, so all of my stereotypes in america are based off of ancient norms whereas other minorities who have had a longer history in america develop different norms.

that's why i find that aspect so frustrating, bc all people know about asians is from thousands of years ago and aren't that normal today in asia.

the political tension w/ minorities is also reaaaaaaaaaaaaly awkward right now, but I'm glad that we at least have a relevant voice in the media, even if it sounds overdramatic / petty.

u know, I'm not DYING over cultural appropriation, just moderately pissed about it.

Mmmh yeah, I understand your point, I have just googled "geisha", and the katy perry's version is far more sexual and inappropriate, especially because is a traditional costume, I am right?

Spoiler

Btw, I think she was just copying / taking ispirations from Katy Keene, like in this case :giggle: I doubt she was even conscious about what she was doing.

First: it's shouldn't be a privilige, it should be a right to wear the clothes you wanna wear and not experience death threats (unless you're wearing a t-shirt that specifically says "please threaten to kill me")

Second: It is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to not address all of this when you're fighting for somebody's right to be themselves. You can't fight for people of color to be respected without having to address racism and white supremacy. It's like... you can't fight for gay marriage without condemning homophobia. It's a conversation that is tiring and reptitive but it kinda has to be done.

Also, i'd like to make it very clear that not only white people are capabale of stealing, ridiculing and exploiting cultures.

Part of life is learning that just because somebody is disadvantaged in life, doesn't mean that they are automatically a good person.
