Yes, Rihanna or more her team was smart. Riri was always present either by her own music or with collaborations but without overexposing herself. The collaborations helped her during the transition from the digital/physical sales era to the streaming era.

Also crossing more into the area of RnB influenced music as a primarily known Pop artist helped her plus her image is different to Gaga's or Katy's because she has some kind of "Coolness" factor with appeals to a lot more straights than Gaga or Katy would do.

Imho she is lucky like Taylor Swift that she has a team which knows how to play the cards right.

Everyone keeps mentioning how Interscope is really bad when it comes to strategies for Gaga and also for not supporting her financially enough etc.. but I think it has to do with Gaga's new contract. Maybe Gaga's new contract allows her to have more percentage of her earnings so Interscope doesn't see the value in investing in her too much since they get a smaller chunk of the pie than they would with someone like Selena or Maroon 5 etc..It honestly makes sense.
