Well, I would say that we simply are not encouraged to be active, as citizens. Furthermore, our society does not place much importance on it. We are severely lacking in civic values. We're taught to be this way. Also, if I might add, elected representatives most definitely do not interact enough to keep the public's attention. I know my Congresswoman, but that's because I was on a student advisory board with her. But if I asked any of my friends or peers, they'd most likely have no idea who she was. The only thing I can recall from my time in public school from Kindergarden to 8th grade was saying the pledge of allegiance. There was little efforts to foster a formulated drive to be politically active. This is just an institutional example I'm giving. Perhaps it's anecdotal, but I'm trying to share my experience of what I believe stifles voter turnout. Another example would be these ridiculous, disgusting voter ID laws. Republican voters are duped into believing that getting identification is easy to do. I could go on. 

Everything in life isn't going to be exciting or have you motivated. Voting is a right and a privilege. It should be something that you understand is precious and important. 

Also, elementary schools teach history every single year and you have state history, American History and Civics in junior high and high school. Somewhere along the way, if you didn't pick it up from your parents, you learned that citizens vote for their government starting when they turn 18. 

All of this sounds like a big excuse. Now, more than ever, the information of who is running...and what they stand for...is at your fingertips. Spend ten minutes looking up your local legislators. People will know when the election is coming up when they see signs everywhere. 

Voter supression is a big issue. Republicans know that limiting voting locations and hours suppresses the vote in certain areas. That's why they do it! They also know that identification is a problem for many people. It's all intentional on their part.

It seems the further and further a select few of our population grows both intellectually and even developmentally, the majority regresses and slows the over all progression of this so-called "great nation."  I get why people voted Trump, you could compare it to the general black population voting for Obama (not all, but some).  The idea that relateability be for the simplest of reasons, one being African American (Obama) or one being anti-establishment (Donald Trump; at least in his rhetoric) seems to take precedence over both reputation and political stance.  I really hope from these shortcomings, the coming generations will make a major impact in politics in the U.S. like never beforehand witnessed.  For FAAAAR too long long now, the older generations have dictated and decided what is to effect the generation next despite guaranteedly not being able to witness it for themselves due to heart failure, cancer and other diseases because ISLAMAPHOBIA is OUR PRIMARY ISSUE AT HAND IN REGARDS TO THREATS AGAINST SURVIVAL!!! 

Kind of building off what you said... Many middle-of-the-road voters have turned against the left because they view them as over-educated elitists who think they're better than everyone else. This is partially because the right has managed to tap into the psyche of the common, everyday citizen with their folksy "We're just good ol' Christian Americans who are wanting to preserve traditional values" rhetoric -- even though in reality, they primarily seemed to be focused on catering to the wealthy. 

The Democrats really need to start re-strategizing to try to win back those middle-of-the-road voters.

I really don't think it is. We're made not to care. It's cool not to care. As if this spontaneously arises from low voting groups. No, it's fostered and up kept. It's intentional.

Most students don't care at all. I might be an anomaly in regards to my interest in it. Just because it exists doesn't mean it's effective in it's deployment.

We can agree to disagree on that, but I know we're both concerned about Republicans' institutional effort against voters. With the neutering of the Voting Rights Act we're even in a worse condition.

We are made not to care? That's crazy. People care enough to bitch 24/7 about their rights and needs on social media. They care, they just won't get out and actually do what needs to be done to change the things they care about! 

Students? Meaning college students? That's not true, either. They care above issues that are important to them. If you care about issues, then you care about the government by extension. They should vote to make their issues important to those in power. If they don't, all they are doing is wasting their time and energy complaining. If they didn't care, they wouldn't be complaining so much. 

You want politicians to care about your issues as a voting block? Be a voting block of reliable voters!

Yeah I didn't think about that. Sorry things are a lot different UK wise. Maybe they should just not rig the candidate selection process and actually choose someone the Democrats like?
