Frankenztein 1,172
In my opinion, Speechless alone is a greater piece of songwriting than Lorde has ever done. Many in this thread are picking Gaga's worst lyric examples and comparing those to Lorde's best to bring Gaga down, but that's a fake way to make comparisons. Gaga has high's and lows, but her high's are higher than any of Lorde's consistency.
NIghtmareElm 2,606
Gaga has never been the best songwriter. It's just not one of her strengths except for TF and TFM. What makes her music so great is how she orchestrates song with her rich powerful voice and production. So yes, Lorde is a better song writer. Not saying Gaga isn't a good songwriter. At least she writes and puts effort into her music unlike that one pop singer from the late 90's.
GypsyBabe 22,836
Lorde has a beautiful way with words and it is one of the reasons that I love her, but Gaga has a lot more flavor. She understands how words work melodically, and she has a more theatrical way of composing lyrics. She alters the mood, and can use words in a very clever way. While I do love Lorde, most of her songs sound very similar. I can't say that about Gaga. Songwriting is more than stringing words together. So although I love both, Gaga definitely is a better songwriter. ⚯͛

DWUW, Dope, Gypsy, MJH also pretty good Paparazzi is the only one that stands out from TF though, Brown Eyes too (myabe?) Lorde is still amazing tho I love her Melodrama for AOTY but her writing can get a bit repetitive melody-wise after a bit. Yeah, I love Melodrama but she uses a lot of the same themes. Dancing, truth, etc. I understand the theme of Melodrama but there's more metaphors than just dancing to relate to partying

Tom Nook 37,807
Oh one thing Gaga has over Lorde is her clever wordplay like in Bad Romance, Judas, Venus, and MJH Uh Red Wine... Convict... Gah Gah...

Lord Temptation 11,209
Oh please. Gaga's lyrics are poetic, vivid, dry, sardonic and masterly. They have romance and mystery. She writes for the ages. "Come to me. In all your glamour and cruelty. Just do that thing that you do. And I'll undress you" Lorde on the other hand writes like a whiney, incoherent kid. Her lyrics are obvious, literal and devoid of interpretation.

This is really obvious in her Coachella performance and BBMAs performance where the background dancers are 'friends' in an enclosed space dancing and talking. Not saying you're wrong that it can be too much but normally concept albums do that. headspin, happiness, DE̤̣A̢̯͔̘T͏͙̗̟̫H̗̙͡ͅ

Yes? no shade I like her songs but in the same way I like Lana's songs. They're all the same but they're the same goodness. It's like how I order some type of spicy chicken for probably 70% of my meals...monotonous but still good. I was thinking during Melodrama how her lyrics are still so immature talking about going to parties and dealing with coming-of-age issues, while albums like Joanne or Lemonade have a sense of maturity and maternalism that Lorde doesn't have yet
