Gaga had no backstory, like you said - no Nickelodeon, no Disney, just 'pre-fame' projects like that MTV Boiling Point thing etc. The Gaga-phenomenon was similar to Britney Spears circa 2000 and Spicemania circa 1997, and no one of late has come close to replicating it. This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff. That’s not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear." Lorde on Lana Del Rey And how the pop forums spiraled out of control and the feuds between fans And the thing that Lana called feminism not an interesting concept when Lorde openly identified as a feminist Lana represents a completely different school of songwriting and her attitude towards her songs is very different from what Lorde tries to achieve with her music They are polar opposites at times. They also had totally different lives. Lorde wasn't rich, she didnt have a drinking problem and get sent to boarding school, she didn't start out making folk ish music for her friends or performing at small clubs and bars with practically 0 audience, she didnt have borderline abusive relationships with men. She was just a kiwi from NZ living her small neighborhood life, which affords a different, perhaps more neutral kind of outlook. I think Lana and Lorde have always been self-aware queens, but where as Lorde wanted to talk beyond artifice and critique it while still appreciating it, Lana wanted to revel in its absurdity, which doesnt surprise me given their lives. That being said, In 2017 she's less interested in blurring the fantasy and real romanticizing tragedy and more wants to talk about the lives of people she knows and their experiences. That progression makes me hyped for Lust for Life, though the admission that it was basically pushed back to add some collabs and other tracks makes me think it won't be a very cohesive album anymore Could Lana have sabotaged ha chance of serving my personal AOTY? We'll find out. Also, this reminds me of SimGMProductions. They really like to parody these two together I don't think anyone that isn't a fan of one of the two would even think they are remotely related to one another though, so I find it fascinating they do it more than other celebrity parodies. 私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから
thierryrreiht 20,997
LMAO at those comparing Lorde and Gaga don't get me wrong I adored Pure Heroine. But go to the GP and ask them to name 3 Lorde songs and they'll blank after Royals. And Gaga's second album, TFM, had MAJOR singles like.. ummm.. idk Bad Romance?! Where does Green Light stand next to that? And yes Gaga is the first and last of her kind (especially since the late 90's and the 2000's). like someone said, now that anyone can become a star, by releasing a viral thing on social media, the market is saturated and everything is a tiny fire that burns loud but fast. ALSO with streaming and in the age of personalization, people curate their own pop culture and can easily ignore "the biggest thing right now". In Gaga's early days there was NO WAY of not hearing about her anywhere we went. i love her so much

I still think that since Gaga, she is the next big thing in pop. Britney was Disney too, but people still credit her as a huge breakout star and pop icon. All the current pop girls; Miley, Demi, Selena, even Taylor have some element of a Disney/Nick background.
zakariah 11,721
I would think so, yes. I literally don't know one person who doesn't know the name 'Lady Gaga'. In fact, back in the TFM era, I was listening to Bad Romance in the car, & my uncle, who NEVER listens to modern english pop music recognized the song immediately and was like 'Oh, this is the Lady Gaga Bad Romance song, right? I know this.' I literally just nodded in shock. Gaga was like a meteorite crashing onto Earth. The fact that she 'accidentally' made electropop the new trend in music is insane. I say this because she's always said that she puts out music different from what the current trend is at that point in time, so I assume that she didn't really expect Just Dance to even crack the Top 20 back then. And I love that she's still doing that today with Million Reasons
doppelganger 3,933
From 90s onwards: Mariah, Britney, Alicia Keys, Amy Winehouse, Gaga and Lorde. And then there's Alanis, Beyonce and Lauryn Hill who were somewhat known before exploding into the international pop scene The two that made the biggest impact were definitely Britney and Gaga. Britney's success was amazing to experience, and I'm not even a fan. The thing about Britney, Christina and JT is that even though they were child stars, there was a gap between their Disney days and their pop star days. With Ariana, Miley and Selena the transition is smoother so most still associate them with their TV debuts
Harry 26,836
But if we're not considering stars who were on Nick/Disney, why is Britney considered since she had a Disney background too? Does that mean Gaga's debut is even more impressive than Brit's? It's debatable
