Two U.S. congressmen have been wounded in a mass shooting after a gunman opened fire on a group of GOP lawmakers and aides practicing for a charity baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, early Wednesday.

House Whip Steve Scalise from Louisiana was shot in the hip and hospitalized, but is expected to survive after Senator Jeff Flake and another congressman rushed out to the field and heroically worked to staunch the bleeding, according to Flake and other lawmakers who witnessed the chaotic, bloody scene.

Rep. Roger Williams of Texas was also shot and wounded, PEOPLE confirms.

Three other people were wounded, as well – including at least U.S. Capitol Police officer, according to Flake and Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks, who spoke to news media shortly after the shooting.

The gunman fired up to 50 times with a rifle before he was shot and wounded by Capitol Police, who were on hand, and Alexandria police officers who arrived within three minutes, Flake and Brooks said.

This is really sad. I may not like their politics, but this is not right. We live in such a scary and volatile time. I hope that everyone is okay.

It's always sad if something like this happens, hope it might open their eyes regarding gun laws.

And what? Shoot back at the guy in an open ball field/park where there are families? They had security that was armed (both officers were shot as well). Bullets flying doesn't seem like a great alternative to a shooter who is 150-200 ft away with a rifle.

Exactly. They're pointing out how dumb the republicans' ideas regarding gun laws are, and now they're paying the price themselves for it.

It's never good to lose a life, but it's literally their fault for not passing a single piece of legislation protecting anyone against gun violence :(

Umm. I know that's why I said that. In fact, it's actually what the GOP usually says when something like this happens. So I'm quite curious to hear what they might say about this incident.

Americans (you in fact) said the same when something in Europe happened :rip:

Is the motive important though?

No, Simon is actually right!

The possibility to get shot dead in the USA is so much higher than to die during an Islamist terror attack or any kind of shooting here in Europe.

Nonetheless the US-Administration is giving out "travel warnings" for European countries, where terror attacks occurred...
