Pop music today has finally completely lost me

I don't know about Despacito, and I don't care. This song really irritates me considering that half of my co-workers are singing it everyday. Tragic, but what compensates for me is the fact that The Cure is being played at my work place, and MØ and Haim also. So it's really amazing. :D

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

'Pop music' as in what's charting right now. I look at the Billboard Hot 100, and I just don't get it. I don't get any of what directions pop music are going for right now. Why the hell is a spanish song #1 all of a sudden? Why is the lack of female artists in the top 10 becoming a norm now?

Perhaps many of the songs are actually good and they are just not my style (because I'm not into hip hop which there's an abundance of now). Or is it simply just that pop music has become utter trash? But why? How? Could it actually be worse than last year?

Despecito is actually a bop, just not when Justin is singing it.

You're talking about Humble, right? I agree with what you're saying, but its visibility is still a good thing (to me). Obviously I wish it wasn't white people trying to feel cool by rapping, but the exposure is still a good thing. I don't know if it's disrespecting the culture so much as not considering the song's cultural implications and just focusing on the braggart quality of the music (and funny enough, not the irony that Kendrick's dissing himself on that track so the white people are also dissing themselves lol). Still, I think the exposure is a good thing long-term. Kendrick speaks to a lot of problems in the black community and if one track going #1 gets people to give the rest of his deeper, more unabashedly political tracks a listen then that's jiggy with me. I mean, look at Gaga. She drops a track like Telephone or Perfect Illusion to get people to listen to the Joannes or Dopes or Americanos of her discography. It's not a 1:1 comparison, but do you get what I'm saying? I mean, if DNA or XXX was in Humble's spot then I think I'd have more to say because that song *is incredibly tied to struggles in Black America. I have a hunch Kendrick made Humble with the intention of broader appeal because it sounds pretty different from the rest of the album. Singles are meant to promote albums and get people to listen and I think that's what he did here. It's a mildly political song (by his standards) that's palatable for broader tastes while also not diluting his own quality too much and thus should get people to give his other stuff a listen and hopefully move some albums and minds. It's a great single as was its intention.

I was talking about Despacito and beibs. Sorry that wasn't clear.

I can't fault Kendrick Lamar for releasing music from his own point of view.

I thought the main guy on Despacito is Puerto Rican, am I wrong about that? Unless Google brought me to a different song named "Despacito" that is sung by Latino guys lololol didn't just flop, I pancaked.

They both are. Then they invited a disrespectfuil twat to ruin the experience.

It would be like Kendrick Lamar having trump rap on one of his songs.

OH. Okay, that's how Beiber is on it? I only hear the song when I got out and I never hear Beiber on it so I thought it was something like he wrote the song and got these guys to sing it lol not even 22 and I feel old and out of touch hahaha

Atleast people can't complain gaga is floping anymore since everyone else is also floping :selena:

Tbh gaga is like top of the flops nowadays. Other heavyweight acts are all flopping more, she's having bigger hits than Britney,Katy,Miley and Beyonce nowadays. The only act who is doing better than her with the GP is Rihanna and possibly Taylor Swift but she is non existent lately.

Because it's 1999 or something again apparently. :giggle:

That time so many Spanish songs sung by popular artist. And singing  Spanish version of your popular hit or actually make Spanish album was a must!

I think one of the main reasons is because young males aren't usually the ones buying music, and so since the rise of streaming we have seen more of the artists that young males listen to dominate the charts because the same people who used to get their music via illegal downloading are now using services like Spotify. It is pretty sad out of the Top 50 Global streaming chart on Spotify, there are only 7 songs sung by females not including features on male DJ songs. I don't even have a problem with the male artists dominating, I like Bruno and Harry Styles and Imagine Dragons etc, but the majority of the songs are simply bad, for example Mask Off by Future is a complete joke, literally just mumbling the same words over a generic trap beat :saladga:

I agree! Everything on the charts rn is complete trash. The only song I like however thats charting atm is Liam Payne's new song bc for some reason it gives me Justin Timberlake vibes :air: everything is trash except also The Cure which cured the charts for the last couple of months its been out.
