Isn't the rainbow flag used worldwide where not every country has the same group of marginalized people? In my country, there are people who are marginalized because they're gay and fat/girly. Where is the color for fat gay people? And when will it stop, then? Isn't the inclusiveness already in the flag? Doesn't adding 2 more colors mean it didn't include them before? I know the intention is good, but the execution is just ridiculous. I bet we'll have fat, thin, short, tall, amputated symbols on top of those colors in the future and it'll be a total mess. Yes, I am talking about America and so is the American city that proposed this, although this is an issue in many places around the world. I am not saying there should be a stripe for every marginalized group, I am saying that people fighting for LGBT rights should fight in unison and collaboration with whatever other marginalized groups exist. People are marginalized for all of the reasons you mentioned but people are not marginalized for being white.

Aranea 10
What... seriously?! I can't believe this petition was made by actual Black/Brown people, it's probably a divisive tactic plan by the extreme right, probably started on 4chan. Not only this would make the rainbow flag a joke (it doesn't have black/brown, it doesn't have white either), this would also serve to create attrition between us. For god's sake, it's obvious. zZzZ
Lion Heart 15,041
In a way this implies that Black and Brown people are more deserving than others who will not be included in the group (Asians). And two, this implies that the original 6 colors represents a particular group (they don't). Rainbows are meant to be inclusive as it is. ▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀

It was created by people who want to acknowledge the ERASED contributions black and brown people made to the LGBT movement and also serve to be intersectional by fighting for marginalized groups, fighting for the rights of black and brown people, even if they aren't gay. I personally don't think the flag needs to be changed, but the discussion DOES need to change. And as I have mentioned in many posts, of course it does not have white. Reread my bolded explanation of the purpose of the black and brown stripes to find out why. White people are not a marginalized group.

First, I don't have an opinion on changing the flag or not, but I do think we need to change the conversation. It implies black and brown people are more deserving? Are you serious? This is specifically in response to the erasure of black people from LGBT history, and it's also specifically a call for intersectionality at a time when black people are being targeted by police and served harsher sentences and brown people are being beaten up for being muslim or asked for their papers just because they're hispanic. If the Asian community were facing these same issues, it would also be our duty to speak up specifically about whatever issues they might be. In fact, the Asian community WOULD be represented by saying "black and brown." Asians refer to themselves as POC quite often. It is not meant to imply that the original 6 colors stand for a particular group. It is adding new meaning to the flag alongside the original meaning. Arab people refer to themselves as "brown" literally all of the time. We've know for decades now that the LGBT people in these regions are beaten, beheaded, lit on fire, lashed and thrown off of buildings into the streets and if you think "well, they are brown too so they are represented by this!" is enough, its not. I am not sure what your point is. I agree that it's heinous that that happens anywhere in the world. I am not trying to oversimplify anything. There are many issues that we can focus on all at once, and I don't think changing the flag will solve them. Changing the conversation will solve them. The proposed addition of the black and brown stripes is about acknowledging the contributions of the black and brown communities to the original fight for equality, specifically in the US where this is being proposed. It's about being an ally to people of color in a white society where they are often mistreated. Doing this in no way negates or competes with the atrocities that you mentioned, but it's certainly not the same context .
Giorno Giovanna 3,178
this is dumb. the lgbt flag is based on a rainbow, and a rainbow is basically splitted waves of light, so the visible color/light spectrum. And there is no brown or black in it. (Brown is actually a mix of colors and black is the absence of light) if you feel left out just because they dont include your skin color in the flag....well deal with it. they don't show anyone's skin color in the flag at all ( I mean who the f... is green or blue colored ) このジョルノジョヴァンナ夢がある

Your attitude towards this very important issue (regardless of your view on what to do with the flag) is very dismissive and I find that troubling. Whether we change the flag or not, we need to acknowledge the ERASURE of the history of people of color and the fact that they created the LGBT movement, and we also need to be allies to people of color at times like these when black people are profiled and served harsher sentences, arabs are beaten for being "terrorists," and hispanic people are yelled at about their papers. But sure, these people should just "deal with it" and the LGBT community shouldn't focus on intersectionality and support them... no.

I edited my post above, so you can read that if you want. The whole point is that the LGBT community needs to be more inclusive, so I agree with you that it needs to be more inclusive of exactly what you are mentioning as well. Intersectionality means fighting for all marginalized groups, so yes, you are right that we should pay attention to the struggles of ALL of those people. Changing the flag is not a solution in itself, we need to change minds, and I'm not trying to oversimplify anything by dividing it up into stripes. It doesn't have black/brown/white, adding it would weaken it IMO, what would it be representing then? an abstract idea? Perhaps I'm wrong, but I have seen A LOT of trolling by the right/4chan that hits the general public, including hashtags on twitter. (#cutforbieber for example), so I would be careful. Also, all black people support LGBT? All black people are gay? Of course not. Unless all POC movements acknowledge LGBT and gives support to us, I don't see how it is fair to change our unique "symbol".
