No, it isn't. Maybe the people are new immigrants and this is their first job? Maybe they don't have the resources yet to learn English? 

She made the assumption these people were not willing to learn English without any background. 

She could have stated she would like to speak to someone in English without her xenophobic "Go back to China!" hysteric remarks.

i agree with you, less aggression would solve this conflict frim the beginning

The Chinese markets are firstly were created to serve the Chinese and Asian people outside of China and Asia, only later for the "natives".. she came to their "house" and complained about their language, when you go to a place with a different culture, even if it's in your country, you don't treat them like sh-t, and a private business can do whatever they want, this is why it's private, they can even tell you to speak in sign language if they want to and everyone need to respect that, if not, they have the right to tell you bye bye or police and bye..

many countries in southeast asia are my dream lands to live at some point of my life, with this being said i do not find myself xenophobic at all.

 

If I want to live in China and if I manage to be able, then I would learn Chinese obviously! Because that is common sense.

Of course, noone cna treat anyone like sh-t. Then I redeem my first point, its just sad living in a country not being able to communicate with others because of the language. Im not supporting her attitude at all. I would not say anything negative if I was there

This woman was rude and her comments were disgusting.

I do agree with @loathereality to a certain extent, in the sense that I personally believe businesses should be language friendly, but it is first and foremost a Chinese market and will most likely procure primarily Chinese (or their respective language) speaking workers. English isn't the priority here.

In the UAE, workers are put through Arabic-training sessions because the local Emiratis (the minorities in the country, and indigenous to the region) often are lost since some of them can't speak English well enough to get by.

It's quite sad and I totally relate with people who feel alienated in their own country. Imagine growing up in a country where your native tongue isn't understood (this goes both ways obviously, but each country has its individual case).

There can be many reasons why they don't speak language and it;s no ones problem but theirs.

If she was smart and really liked their culture she's the one that should have learn a couple of words in Chinese!

Most of the none Chinese-Asian that goes to this kind of markets are  going there because they think they can make sushi or because the food there is cheap because "there's always the cheap Chinese restaurant", it's just to leech on their culture by westerns and still see them as 3rd world people..

Tbh I'd be kinda annoyed too if the person at a store wouldn't be able to communicate with me in the national language. But that doesn't make up for her behaviour. She was literally offered a translation by people in the store in that video so I don't see why one would make such a big deal out of it. Either accept it, point to what you want or leave.

That's absolute bullsh*t. Just because English is the most commonly spoken language doesn't mean that you need to expect each and every person to speak the language. 

What's "common sense" is trying to work through that language barrier. What's "common sense" is to not expect everyone to know English, even if it's the most predominant language spoken there, because realistically, not everyone's going to know it.

Plus, it's a Chinese market. With actual Chinese people there, you have been working there for probably years. It's apart of the culture and apart of who they are. To force your viewpoints and for someone to say "Then go back to China!" is absolutely absurd.

Sounds like you have absolutely no clue how hard it is for most immigrants to put food on the table, provide shelter for their family AND somehow find time and resources to be pursuing higher education for a better job and lifestyle.

Do you think they WANT to NOT be able to speak English? Did you think their DREAM was/is to serve Broccoli for 12 hours a day in a supermarket, for the rest of their lives?  Did you think the immigrants in the video are wasting time everyday just sitting around all day engaging in pointless feuds on Gagadaily like You & Me?

If you really cared, maybe volunteer to tutor immigrants in your own town/community (as I do)  + provide them with free ESL classes instead of supporting / defending a xenophobic racist woman's shameful outburst on a web forum.

And BTW: just because you want to exercise your luxury/privilege at some point to live in a new country and learn a new language doesn't mean you aren't xenophobic. That's like saying "I'm not racist, I have sex with tons of black people!"

i am not saying the same thing that the woman's trying to say.

Essentially, we have languages to communicate. This person's act of not speaking the country's language is of course optional and noone can force him to speak unless he wants to work for the government!

Because he does not speak the official language he is not able to communicate with anyone living there other than chinese speaking people. It is his choice but if it is a choice i do not support it. 

I am not talking just about casual daily conversation. This person eventually will have to go to a hospital or a government department. He will have to speak english (or french) BECAUSE IT IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE NOT BECAUSE IT IS THE MOST COMMMON)
