Bradley 59,022
Metacritic is one of the worst indicators of an album's general reception. They don't judge the album based on its quality but by comparison between the artists current and previous work. That means if an artist released a C-grade garbage, but previously released a D-grade garbage, it will be listed as a good album because of the improvement. If an artist who used to deliver A+ albums now releases an B+ album, the B+ album will be deemed as having received 'negatively'. Revival (by Selena Gomez) and 25 (by Adele) both have equal scores on Metacritic. In my and the Grammy voters' opinion, 25 has better vocals, production, composition and song-writing. But of course Metacritic fails to reflect that. So if you want an accurate reflection of how well an album has received, you need to pay attention to actual reaction from critics and audience alike rather than using a Metacritic score. That's not how Metacritic works, they don't even review albums. How Metacritic works is that they combine all the critic reviews an album has received and calculates the average score based on the scores the critics have given it. OT: The wiki page could per se be edited since Metacritic says "Metascore 61 Generally favorable reviews based on 30 Critics"

OT: The wiki page could per se be edited since Metacritic says "Metascore 61 Generally favorable reviews based on 30 Critics" I understand how it works. But unlike Rotten Tomatoes which does almost the same thing to movies, Metacritic has mostly 10 to 20 reviews and it gives really extreme results. For a relatively popular movie, Rotten Tomatoes takes 50 to 100 reviews into account before giving a score. But yes some level of blame is placed on critics who review albums not based on their quality but comparing them to the artists' previous work. How is Selena Gomez's Revival on the same level as Adele's 25? If we distribute Grammys, we know Selena never stands a chance against Adele. Also ARTPOP might have gotten a lower score than Selena but do we truly think Selena stands a chance against Gaga when it comes to awards that matter?
