Bill Maher says he is ‘very sorry’ for using a racial slur on his HBO show

HBO late-night host Bill Maher was under fire this week for using a racial slur on his show. 

"HBO late-night host Bill Maher apologized for using a racial slur during his Friday show that led to a firestorm of criticism, including from the cable network.

In a brief statement Saturday, Maher said he should not have used the derogatory term “in the banter of a live moment.”

“The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry,” he said.

Maher’s apology, sent through his publicist, was over an exchange he had with Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) on his show “Real Time.” Maher was talking to Sasse about the senator’s book, “The Vanishing American Adult,” which explores why today’s young people are unable to survive in a competitive global economy. The conversation drifted to Halloween and how dressing up is no longer just a children’s tradition. Sasse said adults don’t do that quite as much in his state because it’s frowned upon. In response, Maher said he should visit Nebraska more.

“We’d love to have you work in the fields with us,” Sasse said.

“Work in the fields? Senator, I’m a house n—–,” Maher said, raising both of his hands up. “No it’s — it’s a joke.”

The audience cheered. A smiling Sasse didn’t say anything about the comments, and the conversation moved forward.

In a statement sent to media outlets, HBO called Maher’s remarks “inexcusable and tasteless” and said the cable network will remove that segment from future airings of the show.

Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson and Jack Posobiec, a Trump supporter who wrote for the right-wing site Rebel Media, have called for Maher to be fired. #FireBillMaher is circulating on Twitter.

Other personalities who’ve weighed in, however, came to his defense. CNN host Larry King said he’s been Maher’s friend for years and assured “there’s not a racist bone” in the comedian’s body.

“Let’s accept his apology and move on,” King added.

UPDATE: Senator Al Franken has canceled an appearance on HBO's 'Real Time with Bill Maher' after the host's use of a racially offensive word on last week's show.

 

MY THOUGHTS: I watched that episode LIVE that night as he said it, and I must say I was really not offended...  He says lots of controversial things, especially since he is a comedian and all...  And the context in which he said it in, needs to be taken into account too also!

Bill Maher is farrrrrr from a racist, especially judging by his personal life over the past decades...  But god forbid BLM & Black Twitter don't get up in arms about something/anything nowadays...  SMDH  🙄🙄🙄

Bill is a proponent of the war against PC culture, so it really isn't a surprise, and considering his general outlook on life and humanity in general, I doubt he meant actual harm by this, nor was it actually harming anyone. Comedians of any salt, bring out the taboo into the light so that culture can become more used to something and take the power out of it. Should they get more used to using the N-word? No, but they should work on the root of why that word is so offensive and get at the people who are really hurt for those reasons, not attack a comedian over nonsense.

mmmmmm it was really stupid to use, how does that even slip up for someone who doesn't use it frequently? and not only did he say the word, but he said "house n*****" as in slaves forced to work around the house, which isn't funny.

here for the backlash  but should his career be over? idk let's see where this goes

Meh...words only have the power you give them  he obviously didn't mean to say it in a hateful way and there's others who say much more hateful things without using ignorant slurs.

He's dated black women most of his career, so I am probably sure one or more of them have said it before in front of him...  Just giving some context..

I've never really cared for his humor, I've never really thought he was funny, I've never cared for his work as an "ally", so I really  won't care to see him stay or go. The only thing I will say is that, if this were a pedestrian job or a suit and tie corporate career, he would've been investigated by HR and probably fired. However, as seen by who the current president is, we all know male Hollywood personalities are apparently held to a different standard.

Because the joke wasn't funny.

If you know what's going to happen when you say the word and throw a slave joke out there, and do it anyway, make sure it's so funny that even BLM will laugh.

But it wasn't funny. Which just makes the whole thing messier and more annoying.

But tbh Paula Deen was fired for using the N-word, and it wasn't even on live television, so I mean, would it be a double standard for me to say he shouldn't get fired?

Omg. In freshmen year of high school, my best friend was a black girl. I had a boyfriend and she had a girlfriend but we fake dated each other 'cause not a single one of us was out and we needed a cover to go spend time with our SO's. I used to chill with her and her friends so much that I actually slipped up and said it in front of them before in a casual/joking way

Most people I know say stupid words like this, homophobic slurs, sexist slurs, etc but there's not an iota of actual hate in their hearts. I figure it's got to be the same with Bill here  I'm not trying to make excuses or anything but I don't think someone should be lynched for something so small
