Witness by Katy Perry - Metacritic

Witness isn’t about subtlety, but if you’re going to deliver important messages about female autonomy to a young audience, it’s surely better to shout than whisper.

The Guardian - 80%

While her “edgy” new image might not appeal to everyone, K Pez still has a flair for tunes that quickly seep into the collective consciousness – and it’s kookier than ever.

Entertainment Weekly - 75%

If there were a few more pure pop moments like those songs, Perry would’ve made something truly worth witnessing.

Rolling Stone - 60%

Quote

Throughout, Perry is less like the so-unusual, candy-coated Cyndi Lauper of "Teenage Dream," and is more an anonymous disco crooner, a breathy moderator leading us through passionate but muted songs of longing and empowerment.

Slant Magazine - 60%

Quote

The album lacks both the big hooks that propelled Perry's past hits up the charts and the conceptual and sonic focus to give her pop real purpose.

Witness has great singles, forgettable singles, forgettable filler, and songs that go clunk. As a vehicle for Billboard hits, it’s perfectly competent, but by the second listen, your finger might be itching for the skip button. There’s a spark missing from her Teenage Dream days, but maybe that’s to be expected. She’s an adult now, and adults are kind of boring.

The A.V. Club - 42%

Quote

Despite the presence of bulletproof hit-makers (Max Martin, Sia, Jeff Bhasker) and inventive electro artists (Purity Ring, Hot Chip, Duke Dumont), the record is curiously flat, a shapeless slog that feels remarkably sluggish.

The Telegraph (UK) - 40%

The more time you spend with each song, the more it sounds like a variation on something you’ve heard done better before, a formula in search of a hook.

Los Angeles Times - 40%

Quote

But “Witness,” whose singles keep stalling out like Trump’s travel ban, diagnoses only Perry’s desperation for a hit.

AllMusic - 40%

Quote

So, Witness is a conceptual muddle but that incoherence could've been excused if there were hooks in either its grooves or melodies. Instead, Witness is populated with busy, tuneless tracks that seemed designed to pulsate in the background of a regrettable night.

The Independent (UK) - 40%

Quote

Katy Perry is at pains to point out her assertive individuality on Witness, denying in “Hey Hey Hey” that she’s a fragile little Faberge, but rather “Marilyn Monroe with a monster truck”, a comparison seemingly designed to separate the jocks from the nerds.

Spin - 30%

Witness is an album full of bizarre choices--both the DJ Mustard and Hot Chip-produced tracks are, for some reason, ballads--that has the inherent appeal of a spectacular failure, but that’s about it.

INELIGIBLE REVIEWS:

The album plays out like the "Can you hear me now?" Verizon commercials — a meme before we knew to call it that — as Perry wanders aimlessly in search of a connection. "Can I get a witness?" she pleads. Feeling like the world is slipping out of your fingers is ripe for material, but more of than than not, it comes off as robotic. She's chained to her own rhythm.

I'm guessing special previews were sent out, like with Joanne.

Professional critics usually hear it first.

Well, I read the whole thing and if swish swish is one of the stronger songs then....we are all screwed. Lmao Sorry! I don't really like swish swish. I think the beat is fun, but the lyrics are lame. But that is just my opinion. I guess we will see when the album comes out.

Katy's redemption to be edgy and hated pop stars is finally here. I am proud of her growth :diane:

“Roulette” is a good song, and it was a good song the first 20 times Max Martin and Shellback slapped it together.

They went IN :air:

This would have made me worried for a different album but we all knew Katy isn't really a critic pleaser so I'm hoping for some mindless bops
