Is Gaga Responsible for the Current Pop Dryspell?

tl;dr: Gaga revolutionized the pop star game in 2009, and she's responsible for the success of female pop stars throughout the last 7 years. The GP needs new female pop stars with the same star power to keep the genre alive, but sadly no recent pop stars has what it takes. Gaga set the bar too damn high. :queenga:

The title is clickbait :giggle:, but It seems like the GP is simply not here for female pop stars anymore. Last week Miley peaked at number 10 but she’s already falling down the charts, and even big pop acts like the good sis Kety struggle to get a decent hit.

Why is there no female pop star representing the genre on the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100? :madge:

Well, I think it all goes back to Gaga:stalkga:

Once upon a time, circa 2005-2007, the “Female pop star” was an endangered species. Most female stars adopted edgy-indie attitudes that resembled more the rock mainstream than the larger-than-life pop diva persona that we’ve come to associate pop stars with.

Then, in 2008, Lady Gaga crashed onto the scene making everyone go crazy with her outrageous fashion choices and provocative lyrics. She didn’t give a f*ck about your opinion and took the mainstream music industry by the balls with a wild frenzy of larger than life visuals charged with sexuality and power.

(Female pop stars in the top 10 of Billboard hot 100 by year)

Notice how Female Pop Stars peaked through what is universally considered Gaga’s Golden Age (2010-2012). Gaga revived the genre of female pop stars, and made the GP interested in female pop music again.

Many pop stars benefited from this, with artists like Katy, Ke$ha, and even Madonna reaping the benefits of the momentum Gaga built for pop music.

Some would argue that during the turn of the first decade of the 2000′s other stars could’ve been responsible for this golden age of pop music, but the following charts proves that Gaga was unquestionably the front-woman of this movement.

tumblr_inline_or0xivskTi1qds5sv_540.png

(This charts shows the awards received by main pop girls throughout the years. As we all know awards are nothing more than a popularity contest, so it stands to reason to use this data to see who was the “it” girl each year.)

SO, what’s going on now? Other pop stars have tried to keep this trend alive, and probably Taylor Swift has been one of the most successful ones, but no pop star has managed the keep the interested on pop music the way Gaga did. The GP gets tired of people quickly, so a new pop persona should’ve taken Gaga’s lead and keep the interest on female pop stars, but as of now no pop act has managed to live up to Gaga’s legacy. New pop artists don’t have the impact or talent to keep the golden age of Pop music alive, which Gaga started.

Do you agree? Did Gaga set the bar way too high for new female pop stars? :firega:
Will we have a new pop act that can make the GP interested in female pop stars again? :lana:

Eh, I don't think that's exactly it. It wasn't because other girls fail to achieve the same level of excellence (although they do imo), but the main consumer audience has a bias against the idea of a "pop girl" in the first place and favors a basic urban or house sound.

Spoiler

After living in dorms and hearing all the teenage white boys through the halls rap along to popular songs through the walls, it's my opinion that since they have the deeper voices, they like urban music so they can sing along to it. Songs like Paparazzi and Tik Tok from the pop reign are hard for most untrained males to sing the same notes to whereas One Dance is much easier. Maybe all the pop music that they couldn't sing to drove them to genres more suited for their voice as even male pop artists (e.g. The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake) have a rather higher singing range than the average male.

It's only an anecdotal hypothesis, but I know it's fun when you can sing to a song that's within your range.

Well, what I suggest is that "urban and house" music existed long before Gaga came onto the scene, but her impact was such that it shifted the concept of "mainstream" sound, pushing Electronic music to the front. It's important to notice that this wasn't Gaga's doing alone, but she was a major force that defined the mainstream sound during the first years of the 2010's. The fact that music is turning now away from female pop music and into male urban sound proves that other pop stars have failed to keep the interest in their craft.

It's because Gaga has studied and referenced the greats.  The rest are trying to be pulled out of the thin air of Aesthetic and it's not everlasting

Post source please. And yes she did influence the course of pop music but that influence has run its course the past few years. She is being left behind now.

You're right, sorry. I retrieved most of the info from Billboard website but I'll add it to the original post.

Also, I think it's pretty understandable that the GP would move on from Gaga. People always want something new, so it really was inevitable. What we need is someone talented and interesting who can keep up Gaga's momentum, but apparently most new female pop stars aren't up to the task. :madge:

Oh it's all just my opinion lol :poot:
The statistical data I retrieved it myself from Billboard's website and MTV's website, and then did some quick graphs on excel.I just found interesting that there's a clear correlation between the years Gaga was most famous and the years when female pop stars as a whole enjoyed the most success. It cannot be a coincidence, right?

I'm no expert on music trends... I don't follow charts... I don't care what young trends are or, where they're headed... I only know what I hear and, whether it's good on my ears to listen to, excites my emotions by what it's story is, and my own sense of value in vocal talent is that presents it to me... I don't really care for listening to radio anymore but, I do check out the top 100 rated songs by all artists in pop and, some other genres of music.. What grabs my attention after sampling what's out there is, the overall lack of quality in the songs, lyrics, music  sound, and especially... the sheer lack of vocal talent... The trend for a while now has been downplaying actual singing artists in favor of no singing artists... That's just a fact... There are no good stories in songs anymore... It's all attitude with a beatbox backing which, any two bit sidewalk rap noise attendant has access to and, they are not artists; just attention seekers... True singers, songwriters, and musicians like Lady Gaga are going by the wayside... I don't foresee any woman smart enough, edgy and, creative enough, and who can actually play music, write good songs, and sing them with a quality voice, replacing her... Gaga raised the bar in pop music... There is noone currently out there even remotely close to what she's accomplished, what she can and could do if she wanted... I'm personally glad she's not still in the lime light anymore... Not that she's not deserving she is... But, at least now, she gets to live more of what she's  maturing into and, earned by way of her hard work and, dedication to her passion for music... Now, she isn't a slave to ratings, charts, opinions, or crtics... She can make movies, record great songs like, The Cure, and work with other artists and perform benefits, whatever; one song, one event at a time at her leisure.... Everything that takes away from her creativity doesn't have to rent space in her brain... For that, I'm very proud of her...
