A Catholic family is suing the city of East Lansing, Michigan, after their farm was kicked out of the city farmers market for refusing to host same-sex weddings.

Steve Tennes, owner of Country Mill Farms in Charlotte, is represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom advocacy group in a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday, claiming his farm has been targeted because of his family’s religious beliefs, the Lansing State Journal reported.

“Our faith and beliefs on marriage and hosting weddings at our home and in our backyard of our farm have nothing to do with the city of East Lansing,” Mr. Tennes said at a press conference Wednesday. “Nor does it have anything to do with the produce that we sell to the people that attend the farmers markets who are from all backgrounds and all beliefs.”

The city says farmers, even those not located within East Lansing, have to agree with its non-discrimination ordinance in order to participate in the market.

“I think it’s a very strong principle that you should not be discriminating against somebody elsewhere and then come here and want to participate in our market,” East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas told a local NBC affiliate.

Posting this because I'm gay, I live in East Lansing, and I own a business that will be a vendor at the EL Farmer's Market and will be attending myself on Sunday. 

Basically they're pissed off that the city won't let them participate in the farmer's market, which they're citing as religious discrimination, when they themselves discriminated against a lesbian couple. The city is saying it has nothing to do with religious beliefs but the farm breaking East Lansing's city ordinance about equality. 

The maddening thing is that although the city is doing a great thing for social equality by banning them from the market, there are so many people outraged over this, that they would be banned. It's disgusting. And now they're suing and playing the victim, and it seems to be working for them

It won't work for them in the long run, I wouldn't worry. What the farmers are doing is illegal.

I don't get why bussiness decide to do that. If they don't feel comfortable with gay marriage then fine, but if they don't refuse then they get money and their services get expanded. So if they don't refuse, it's a win-win.

You do realize that those people view homosexuality as you would view pedophilia, right?

I obviously disagree with those who discriminated against the lesbian couple but it's not that hard to understand why they wouldn't want to give them their services.

Again, I never said that. But I'm saying that to them it is an act against god and it's not about the business and expanding it to people they disagree with

Because if ppl have beliefs they dont wanna compromise them for money

 

Sure ppl can get upset that they descriminated

 

But it can also be offensive to suggest to someone who cares about your beliefs you'll make more money
