Jim Carrey defends Kathy Griffin

Jim Carrey has some very strong opinions about whether comedians should speak up about American politics -- and he's sharing a provocative "dream" he had about President Trump with ET. 

The comedy icon spoke with ET at the premiere of the new Showtime comedyI'm Dying Up Here, where he addressed the controversy surrounding Kathy Griffin's recent photo shoot in which she held a facsimile of President Donald Trump's severed head.

"I think it is the job of a comedian to cross the line at all times -- because that line is not real," Carrey, 55, explained matter-of-factly to ET's Leanne Aguilera on Wednesday night, just hours after Griffin was fired by CNN.

"If you step out into that spotlight and you're doing the crazy things that [Trump is] doing," Carrey continued, "we're the last line of defense. And really, the comedians are the last voice of truth in this whole thing. It's impossible to get away from it." 

The Golden Globe winner went on relate a dream he claimed he had recently. "I had a dream the other night I was playing golf with Donald Trump," he recalled. "I was standing beside him with a club in my hand, and I was considering my options when I suddenly woke up." 

"It was one of those dreams where you just want to get back to sleep so you can finish it, you know?" Carrey added.

Griffin faced immediate backlash for her role in the photo shoot and issued a lengthy apology video hours after the pictures were released, where she admitted that she felt she'd "crossed the line." 

"I sincerely apologize," Griffin said. "I'm just now seeing the reaction to these images. I'm a comic. I crossed the line. I moved the line, then I crossed it. I went way too far." 

The blowback was immediate, and the 56-year-old comedian was subsequently let go by CNN, where she routinely hosted their New Year's Eve special, alongside Anderson Cooper, for the last 10 years. 

Cooper also issued a stern rebuke of the comedian on Twitter, writing,"For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate."

Even Chelsea Clinton disagrees with what Kathy did. I can not support a person who does a fake beheading to the President of the USA. In this day and age with terrorism and violence, no way should she have ever done that to the President, no matter how much she disagrees with his positions. It is time to move on from this and focus on bigger issues.

well considering he's arguably the most hated american president in recent memory as well as the fact he's not qualified to be the president and has proven himself to be an evil person i believe he certainly deserves to see such images.

Let's not forget Republicans made racist murals, protests, burned and lynched effigies of Obama and more when he won so republicans should be thankful this is the only extreme imagery that's happened about Donald. Americans seem to think that the ultimate way to send a message is to meme him smh.

I'm with you. The president is an important and respectful position and should be taken that way regardless of who's in the spot. Of corse it's horrible when republicans do it to democratic presidents, and it happens a lot more frequently than the other way around, but that doesn't mean the other side should stoop that low.

Terrorists want us to break apart, to fight and disturb eachother umungst ourselves. It's critical that the US and every country being terrorized stays united in every way possible.

People didn't lose their **** when racist right-wing nutjobs were putting fake Obama dolls were in a noose because "oh they're just being Republicans!" or how everyone wasn't surprised when Republicans in the house and senate literally voted against their own good will because Obama was black.

I don't really care what she says the artwork means. When everyone looks at it, it looks just like the terror beheading videos especially the way she grabs the bloody beheaded head by the hair. He is the president of the USA and you do not support or invoke violence towards anyone. Kathy went way too far and I am glad her career is over.

If you think her career is over this, you honestly have never followed it in the first place. This isn't the first shocking thing she has ever done and it won't be the last.
